I did launch classic before my latest attempt. There was a difference this time too. The difference was the presets for the video were all high this time instead of High, mdium medium. Didn't matter though because the 436 patch still breaks it. It never does the second part of the patch and then I get a invalid player actor error of some sort. I will uninstall UT again tonight and reinstall it without the 436 under OS 9 just to see how sweet it is supposed to look. When you say install under OS9, to me a pc guy, that only means launch OS9 which is wierd in itself. Because it's on does that mean it installs in Classic? Do I have to install to a OS 9 folder too? SOme one needs to give me a step by step while on a Mac with an OS = to or better than OSX. I'm sure it is working for ya'll but my system appears to be different. They are porting UT to OSX by the way. The Epic guy named Ryan who ported UT2K3 is going to do it he said back in May of this year. I'll post the post later. Thanks!

Tonight I trashed the UT again and reinstalled the full Ut Mac ver. 400 again. I did this in OS9 which I think is dumb to start it up first because it's starts bt itself when I try to install it anyway. The game is extremely dark. The frame rates got up to around 35 with a hic-ups. The bright doesn't adjust at at all in the game. I installed the bonus pack one two. That took perfectly. I tried the 436 again and BAM! Error! It's that damn 436 patch. It's simple at this point. If I can't boot into OS9, then I can't install 436. If I can't install it then I can't play online. Doesn't matter anyway. The game installs so dark that it's not palyable. Glen Ryan, the guy who ported UT2K3 for Mac said he'd fix the OSX issue once and for all. He said it in may and I'll be waiting. Peace all!

This looks like it may be the end of the thread for a little while. I hit that last page on the internet that says "You've seen everything there is and maybe you should try other hobbies" tonight. I did this looking for my answer to why 436 won't install on a Mac that can't boot into OS9. My last best hope is one of a few other suggestions I've found. Here they are:

1. I'm told that the UT game of the year version ships with 436 built in already. I might have to buy that!

2. I got this out of a forum where lots and lots of other Macsters were gripping about my same issue:

[Start of the quote]
At long last it is solved. It worked. And if anyone else ever has this problem, here's what you do...Install it on another machine, install all your mods, maps, patches, whatever, and copy the whole damn UT folder over to the problem machine when you're done. I have tried this before, copying the updated app file or the INI or other elements of the folder, but this time I just took the whole ver 436 folder on the iBook and copied it to my iMac. Didn't even reallocate RAM (since it was set to 150 on the 'book). Started up fine the first time and running great since, and I have added mods with no problems.
Now, I still don't know why it won't install correctly. I mean, I use the same CD to install on both my macs, same update files, everything. But it works now, so I really don't care. Thanks all, for the suggestions.
[End of the quote]

I have a friend with a Mac so I think I'm going to ask for some help from him and give this a try. That's it for now. Thanks to all of you for your help........thus far. There will be many more questions to come.

Actually launching Classic mode prior to installing an older program is pretty smart when trying to limit the number of things that are causing the problem. Why leave anything to chance.
I hadn't realized you were using the original UT (Version 400).Are you sure that you don't need to install the older patches first. I have the game of the year addition so this isn't a problem for me but I do recall there being numerous patches (i.e. 405a 405b 412) prior to the 436 patch.

The brightness issue was taken care of in the OSX patch Herm.

U stated your going to wait for the newest OSX patch for the mac but I don't see how that is going to do you any good if you ccant get the 436 patch to stick.

I hadn't thought of this before but why do you really want to put UT on the iMac anyway?

I say I still don't understand. I can't boot in OS9. Whether I launch it from OSX or jst start the install, OS9 launches either way. I don't see what the difference is.

I read that the 436 patch (in the readme) includes all of the other patches. You don't have to stack them to get the results of 436. I am now going to send back JimmyNuetron back his copy of the game and buy a "Game of the Year" edition since it has 436 built in already.

I'm glad to hear the OSX patch fixes the lighting but I had actually already read another way to set it from a .ini file so i wasn't too worried about it.

I'm doing the install on the iMac because I want to be fair about my judgement of Macs and I really want to be able to say that I beat some of the regs with a no-button mouse. Speaking of the no-button mouse, do any of you actually use it or did you go out and by the MacMouse or iMouse or whatever Mac calls it that has all of the buttons and the wheel? Do you think I should get one? I just told the wife last night how to right click with a Mac. She was mad I waited a week before telling her! hehehe. Tell me about my mouse options with this little beauty that I have lovingly named "Alice the iMac"

Thanks for all of the help too!

I have arranged to install the game on a OS9 based machine tomorrow at work. Once the whole thing is installed with 436 included, I will have it copied off to a FireWire external HDD that I will bring home and try to copy over and launch on my Mac. I heard it works. Wish me luck!
