Well cool, the technician came a day earlier than promised, and before noon too. It didn't take him long to realize that the problem was in an amplifier somewhere up the street. The cable TV was ok because the down stream amp was ok, but the upstream amp was shot. Probably due to the massive power failure 10 days ago. While the guy was working on the line outside my house, my neighbour from across the road told him that her internet was down too. The whole street was down, actually. So nobody else complained? Sheesh.
Anyhow, by 3pm I saw another truck from the cable company working a few doors up the way. I got back from my errand, and found that I'm online again! :D
Sweet. I was going through some nasty withdrawl there.
That withdrawl problem got me to telephone the cable company to discuss cheaper options.
It turns out I'm on a more expensive cable modem option. (which explains the blazing speeds I've always gotten.) I was never told of the somewhat slower, and cheaper alternative. 128kbs download and 128kbs upload for about $15 less a month. I've ordered the slower service to start on Sept 2, and I'll see how I like it. Their 56k prices didn't seem like much of a bargain. I didn't like the alternatives to what I'm getting for cable TV service, too much money for not enough TV IMO, so I'm back on the antenna at the end of the month.
A cable modem at just over $400 per year is an expense I can live with, as opposed to just under $1200 for TV and only a slightly faster modem.

I'll be curious to see what my ping is at Bo's server starting on the 2nd. In the meantime however, it looks like a nameless entity's fragged body chunks will be bouncing around in the arenas for some time to come after all.

Glad to hear it, Nameless. Also glad that your problem was repaired. Now, in the words of Mahatma....

I've heard about people who pay for cable modem and then can somehow get the basic tv also. Or maybe it's vice-versa.

In any case, glad you will not be disappearing!

Probably through a Y connector. Or a splitter.
Degrades your internet though.
