I've noticed that map-loading times are much longer now too. Is it because both arenas are on the same computer?

I don't know what this PC's deal is. It is grinding all the time. I think it's a ram issue. It ran out of virtual memory and had to increase it's own size. I've been trying to get a better processor and more ram for the last several days. It's also been under DOS attack netcome/go's constantly. Last night I had two different folks attacking so I firewalled with a new one and that's when it really started getting wierd. More later. I wish I had better answers but I don't know yet. Thanks for letting me know!

Herm, have you tried making the virtual memory static -- like setting the min and max size exactly the same?

I found two IP address attacking the hell out of the server last night. I tried to ping them both and got nothing back. They were trying to log in like 500 times a minute each! I played with some others during that time and it actually played oK but they were making my log file huge which also used cycles on the server. So, I installed a software firewall on the server and the attack was stopped instantly at a lesser cost since the log stopped growing and eating all of my ram. I'm finding that I hate the new box the servers are on. It's a compaq and I couldn't upgrade the video without paying the devil and now the ram is giving me hell. I bought 368 mb of PC133 Cas2 for it and it doesn't likeit! The required is PC100 cas3. Go figure. I have a feeling I will sell this box and get a better one soon that is a clone and happy. I have restored it to the same condition as two nights ago minus the attacks. Bare with me folks. I hate this too. Thanks and LATER!

Thanks Scify but I'd rather not have excuses. No one else serving complains like I do. I try but I do alays have an excuse. I'll try to stop that when the excuses stop presenting themselves! I need a clone with a PIII 500 minimum, two modem cable connections, 768mb ram and that's about it. From there, i should be able to serve like a chef!

all your efforts are apriceated herm maybe the twats that are trying to hack you realise that cg is one of the longest serving redeemer servers and they are just jelous,
or they had there butt kicked one to many times.

Herm I think your not the only one getting hacked bud. I brought down my server Saturday night due to some odd stuff I was seeing on my server. Had TCP/IP connections popping in and out and from the server console it was showing at least 10 connections even tho there would not be a real person on the server at all. Could it be DOS attacks that are giving it grief? Found a repeating IP address on the log files and did a traceroute to find that it was coming from somewhere in Finland. Wasn't sure if it was just my UT install messed up so I tried another install I had on my server machine and was getting the same thing.

So my question(s) is do I need to see about another firewall? Do I need to see about resetting my IP address? Should I do both of these things? None of these things? Nuke the server altogether?

Inquiring minds want to know :D

Kid,
I had the same thing going. At times, I showed 22 players in my server and my max is set to 12. Go figure bebause like yours, no one was actually on the server. Go to UT.ini file and find "Supress" add a line like this to that area:

supress=DevNet

close and save the file then reboot and see if that does anything for you on the console. Let us know. Later!

Thanks there Herm.

Will check into that after I get done melting away mowing my grass. Nothing like push mowing in 95 degree weather (heat index of 101) with humidity that a chainsaw can't put a dent in. :lol:

I'll let ya know if everything works out with it.
