I had decided to upgrade the CG server a while back and the PC I had planned to get fell through so I stayed with the current system. It has been a Compaq Deskpro 2000 Desktop with a Pentium 200Mhz chip. It had a built in 1mb video card that couldn't even play the game in full screen and the best FPS average it ever got was around 5FPS.
Tonight I upgraded CG!!! I over-clocked the CPU up to a stunning 233Mhz and disabled the built in video then installed a video card I found in a drawer that I had forgotten about. It's a GeForce2 MX 200 w/64MB ram. This is significant because I was unable to run the server in OpenGL mode before because the built in video card could run OpenGL. Now that I have a new card that does, I average about 15-20 FPS and can play the game in full screen AND use OpenGL!
The last thing I did was up the bandwith the game thinks is available to LAN instead of cable. This is really just a test. I don't know what to expect here. ??? I'm about to go test it now. I hope the app-error that always shuts down the server was D3D related and now the server might not crash as often, even if attacked with the D3D attack! Now I just need to put it back on the UPS so storms will stop knocking it out.
Let me know if you notice anything good bad or ugly about CG over the next day or two! Thanks all.
