OK you computer jocks, time to impress one another:

1. Every time I run UT the right 1" or so of my monitor does not show the game. Instead, it initially flickers black with the maximize, minimize, close buttons, then it just goes black so my UT playing screen is smaller. I have removed & installed the game, no change. Ideas? :?

2. Non-UT: I want to fix my registry (possible connection with #1?) and I know I need to back it up first. I've done this before using the XP backup "System Space," which required me to sit at the computer for about two hours and eat up 40 floppies or so. I want to back up onto a CD but the XP system won't let me do that directly (surprise). So I need to use my CD writing program, which means I need to know exactly what files to back up. Help? :?:

As an aside, I posted this at Microsoft "Help" and -- shockingly -- received no response. Apple is looking better and better. :x

Any help would make me love you forever. And you know I will.

ey CF,

try for problem #1 to restart your pc (i think i got the same problem :? ). When you start UT you got a full black screen and then its go minimalise. After that you play on a small screen with low resolution. Let me know if you got the same problem  .

I don't understand what you are saying in the description. I need a better explanation of what is happening when you start it up. What is the right 1? What do you mean minimized? Can you see the game or is it just black? etc etc

#2

I don't know about the backup at all. Sorry.

Thanks for the responses. Here is more info:

Jarg: I haven't changed anything (that I know of); I suppose the next thing to try is to reinstall drivers but -- hardware neophyte that I am -- I'm scared I'll make it worse. What I would do is just go to NVIDIA (it's a GEForce 4) and download latest drivers. Any probs with that?

Herm: When I start the game and it does the very first screen (the movie with "In [whatever year], in order to stop violence among miners, the Liandri Mining Company...."), the right-hand side of my monitor (about an inch and a half) does not show the game at all -- so the dimensions of the game itself are smaller. Where the game *should* be on the right, is black; in the upper righthand corner is a flickering "regular" window -- has the "x," the minimize and the maximize symbols. There is nothing else over there -- no words at all. Just black and flickering partial toolbar.

When I start playing the game this stops, and the right-hand side is just black. The game itself remains "smaller" than it should be.

What I don't get is why the problem would "change" when I start the game -- that sounds to me like it's a problem with the game and not the card. I don't have this problem with any other apps., although I don't play any other games.

cf

ps: Hey Jarg, did you know that if you run spellcheck on a post with "Jarg" it says your name is not a word and suggests "jerk"?

hey cannon not sure if the gforce 4 uses detonator drivers but if it does theres a programme called detonator destoyer that totaly removes old detonator drivers before you install latest one so theres no conflict when op finds old driver or bits thats been left think this only happens with windooze but there again not sure. I know i had probs with detonator driver and had to reinstall hardrive after it crashed puter so ain't updated drivers for some time the link to prog http://guru3d.com/detonator-destroyer/ good luck

Fodd, Try changing the resolution setting in UT. It may be that the current setting is not congruous with your vid card/monitor.

Nope. It's really easy. Just download the drivers at Nvidia's site. Click *HERE* Save them to an easy to access place (I usually save them to desktop until I have them installed). Now go to Add Remove Programs in the Start menu. Find the NVidia Display drivers and remove them. You will be prompted to restart. When you reboot, the screen will look like crap, but don't worry. now install your new drivers. After you are done with the install, right click on your desktop, select properties. Change the resolution of your screen to whatever looks best, and change the color quality to 32 bit (or whatever you like. Depending on the monitor you use, I would suggest changing the refresh rate from the stock 60 hertz to something above 70. This is under the Advanced button on the last tab of the properties. The reason is that 60 Hz is known to cause monster headaches, because it is not fast enough. You may have to play with the settings on the monitor after this.
If you want, while you are in the advanced tab, you can play around with your Nvidia cards settings. I use an ATI card, so I really do not know how much the Nvidia drivers have changed, so someone else can help you here if you like.

LOL, Lot's of wisdom can be found in the spellchecker :D

This may not help your problem... but at least you will be running the latest software for your card, and will probably get a little better performance. How old is your monitor?

How large is your monitor, Cannon? When I play on my 20" monitor on the old PII with the 3dfx voodoo 3 3000, I always get that inch across the top and the right hand side blank. I always thought it was the game that couldn't handle a large monitor. :?

Once again I'm amazed at how the help everyone gives here. The winner of the monitor derby is.... Torp! (And, by extension, Sci.) Of course the total loser is .... me, since I didn't check the settings first.

I have absolutely no clue how they got changed -- I haven't gone to the hardware setup tab (except to bind speech, as you might guess) since I first installed the game. Anyway, I reset it and tried out some different settings. Not only is the problem gone now, but the game looks better than it ever has. So THANKS.

Always one to play with fire, I'm going to get the new drivers anyway....

Hey Jarg: I used to work with a guy whose last name was "Adkins." Spellcheck suggested that what you meant to type was "Itchiness." This was ten years ago and we *still* call him "Itchy." I hope that the same doesn't happen to you.....

Jarg with grandchildren:
"Hey Jerk!"
"Now, kids, be respectful towards your grandfather."
"We *are* being respectful. You should hear what we call him when he's not around."

Thanks folks.

Hey CannonFodder

For UT check these settings and see if they are this way ( if not change them ).

Game resolution should be the same as Windows resolution.
EXAMPLE: If Windows is running in 1024X768 in 32 bit , then set UT to the same settings.

Run UT Maximized ! This can be done two ways.

Method 1: Hit the Maximize button in the upper right corner of the UT window.

Method 2: This is better over all. Go to your start menu in Windows. Find the UT startup in the menu. RIGHT CLICK on it and select "Properties". In that window you will see a option called "Run" . It has a pull-down menu to that option. Pull down that menu and select " Maximized " then click " Apply " at the bottom of the window then click OK.

This should take care of your problem.
FYI ; I run the GeForce 4 card.

I think that I have the answer to your second question. I successfully created a copy of my registry on CD. Here is how i did it.
.5 insert a CD-R in the appropriate drive.
1. Under the Start Button, select Run.
2. In the box, type regedit.
3. Scroll to the top of the left hand list and hi-lite HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
4. Go to File and select Export.
5. In the "Save in" box, hit the scroll down button and choose your CD-RW Drive.
6. in the "File name" box, I named mine HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
The same as the registry name. Copy and paste works nicely here.
7. Hit the Save button.
8. Under the Start button, select "My Computer"
9. Double click on your CD-RW drive.
10. The file should be on the screen, waiting to be written to disk.
11. Go to File and select "Write these files to disk"
I'm sure that you can handle the rest from there.

Thanks for asking this question, as I needed to do this as well. I hope this helps. :)
