You folks who have a Dell computer, desktop, and such..

How are they working? any problems, regrets, wish I hadda done thats' ? Need input...

As much as I dislike "built" computers I just can't compete with DELL. I can get the following system:

Dell Small Business has an additional $50 off Dimension 4550 desktop and free CD-RW Upgrade now. 4x DVD Writer is only $99 more. (Thanks KKS)

Dimension 4550 desktop - P4-2.53Ghz/533Bus 128MB/Free 60GB 7200 RPM HD upgrade, 48x CD, Ethernet, XP Home, Word perfect pack $599 - auto $50 off - 5% coupon - $100 rebate = $422 shipped free.

2.66Ghz upgrade only $20!

Choose Desktops, Choose Dimension, Featured Systems under 4550, Customize it on Cheapest, Free 60GB upgrade/Free upgrade 48x CD-RW - Continue, Continue, Add to cart, add coupon: 6687583F8226

Boy-O-Boy, Looking good $$$ wise. I wouldn't put it up as a server to replace my old P-4, BUT...I gotta get something better than this burnt Celery 300A. Too long in the tooth..

Other point is that this DELL board will run a 2.8ghz P-4 and may even go to 3.0+ghz. If I can find the right jumpers (and I will) I can still personelize it..HEH HEH !!

So, what do you DELL users think of your systems?

duh Hook

What? You can replace the chip on that and then OC it???

I saw that deal -- it's pretty nice, but if you can push the processor, it is sweet.

MORE details, HOOK!!!

Mahatma

<SRA>/v/ahatma

I have had mine for a couple of years, and haven't had much of a problem (aside from a lightning strike). I tweaked everything out when I ordered it (sadly right before the Ghz processors). Built my other one (or two) from the ground up. Nothing like messing with factory specs, though. Go for it, in my opinion. They offer great services, and I am very pleased with my system. I plan on ordering another in the (near) future.

Ok, commercial over..........where's my internship?

I am on my second Dell now, and have no regrets. Nothing in either box has ever failed. I had nothing but the very best of service from the technicians at Dell the two times I had to phone for help with box #1.
(Both problems were my fault. )

The current box is very stable, and I like the improvements to Windoze that XP offers over the old 98SE.

The only word of advice I would offer is to look very closely at what the related deals are for an 8250. The 4550 is a nice unit, but IMO the 8250 is better. The deals on them are usually a little richer too. It just depends on what you want, what the deals/offers are from Dell that week, and if you have the extra $150, more or less, that is the price premium for the faster RAM.

I gotta say that I like my Dell 8100 very much. I did have one problem in the beginning, bad motherboard. After talking to Dell support, they sent someone to my house the next day. The tech determined it was the mobo, and the next day, a new one was installed. I also got a new power supply out of the deal.

Now about that jumper config.... PLEASE KEEP US INFORMED!!!!
{SRA} The Jargonaut

I thought I would hate my Dell because I love to tinker and OC. But it has been the best computer I have owned. It is completely silent -- no sound whatsoever! Compared to the rigs I have owned with mini-airplane jets on the heatsink, this Dell is all about peace-n-quiet.

HOOK, GET BACK IN HERE WITH THE DETAILS RE: OCing A DELL!!!

<SRA>/v/ahatma

Well...for better or worse I did it !!

Dude...I Gotta DELL !!!

So far, it LOOKS real good. I just can't build another one for that price. I can and will use parts that I have in the 1.8ghz ( o/c'd to 2.4 now ) to fill in the missing goodies on the Dell. Vidio, sound cards and speakers as well as a ZIP, CD_RW and 768 meg of mem will swap over to the Dell. So it should be a sweet setup.

And as far as the o/c ing the Dell goes... It only makes sence that they use one board for all the 533mhz FSB P-4's. Dell will build a box for you with a 2.4, 2.53, 2.66, 2.8 and a 3.0ghz cpu. Right? So, they would not buy 5 differant boards, one for each cpu ! They would use, like every other board mfg. dose, jumpers and set the board at the right speed. All ya gotta do is look for the jumpers and jump around.
Can't adjust the volts or creep up on the sweet FSB spot but if I'm lucky with my cpu, I can get 2.8 or 3.0ghz with the right jumper settings.

Heres what I got:

Pentium® 4 Processor at 2.66GHz w/533MHz front side bus/ 512K L2 Cache Qty: 1 Unit Price: 619.00
Floppy Drive and Additional Storage Devices 3.5 in Floppy Drive
Mouse Dell® 2-button scroll mouse
Sound Card Integrated Audio
Security Software Dell SecurityCenter by McAfee, 90-day introductory offer
Limited Warranty, Services and Support Options 1 Year Limited Warranty plus 1 Year On-site Service
Software Bundles WordPerfect® Productivity Pack with Quicken New User Edition
Operating System Microsoft® Windows® XP Home Edition
Memory 128MB DDR SDRAM at 333MHz
Monitors -No Monitor
Keyboard Dell® Quietkey® Keyboard
Digital Music Dell Jukebox powered by MUSICMATCH
Speakers -No Speaker Option
Hard Drive FREE UPGRADE! 60GB Ultra ATA/100 7200RPM Hard Drive
Network Interface Integrated Intel® PRO 10/100 Ethernet
CD or DVD Drive FREE UPGRADE! Way to go. Sounds sweet. You know the dude from the commercials got put in jail for having pot on him. You won't be seeing him in commercials anymore. Continue letting us know what you think. Congrats!

Hermskii

Dude, he was probably in chemo-therapy or something.

Hey Hook, the mobo is the one I was asking about, way back when. I have the Dell 4550 with a P4 2.4Ghz. If I can pump that baby up to 3.0, that would be sweet, but usually you need to adjust voltages and so forth. Their proprietary BIOS keeps us from messing with it, which was why I was hoping to flash the mobo with a generic BIOS.

If you have a website where they discuss changing the jumpers on Dell 4550s, please post it.

Thanks,
Mahatma

PS: You got a sweet deal. I saw that on techbargs and almost bought another puter (except I am saving up for a MAc).

<SRA>/v/ahatma
