Got a networking question for all y'all gurus out there.

A friend of mine finally pulled himself out of the dark ages and got cable hooked up at his house. He wanted both of his computers to have internet access to play online games and such so he went out and purchased a Linksys NR041 4 port DSL/Cable router. Well both computer are able to get on the internet just fine (as far as websurfing goes). But recently he has run into a snag. I had turned him on to UT a couple of months ago and with the new cable connection he wanted both of these computers to be able to play on the same server (makes it alot easier to yell at somebody across the room). Well this is when the snag showed up.

For example: When both computers would get on the same server, the ping on each computer would go thru the roof. One machine on the server alone would run great......about 50 to 100 in the ping department depending on the server but when both are on......the ping climbs off the charts (watched it go all the way up to 5000 before disconnecting).

He has called the Linksys people to see if they had any insight to why this was the case and was told it could not be done. He also tried the Cable people and they were at a loss as to what to tell him.

Does anybody have any ideas to why this might be happening? Is there any certain settings that might work this problem out?

Modem: Surfboard SB4100
Router: Linksys 4 port DSL/Cable Gateway Router NR041

Any and all help would be most appreciated

A very network dumb |<idcapri

Yo kid. I have a Linksys 2.4GHZ 4 Port Cable/DSL wireless Router. I've never tried to play unreal at the same time on both systems but I'll give it a shot and let you know what the pings look like.
Naughtius Maximus

Thanks Naut. Any help at this point is most appreciated. Poor guy was ready to kill me considering I had tested my crazy network at home and was getting good steady ping (120 on 2 computers). My network at home doesn't have a router per say. My roommate's computer has 2 network cards.....first one is connected to the cable modem.....the 2nd is used to connect to a hub and is the internet sharing part......and my computer is connected to the hub. So needless to say I wasn't much help to him when it came to the router part.

I guess it could not be the cable company's problem considering that my friend and I use the same provider.

Thanks for the help and keep the comments coming.

|<idcapri

I have a Linksys model BEFSR41-CA ver. 2

I have not had any problems with ping while having both computers on the same server at the same time. The only no-no I recall from the instructions was to avoid using port #1 unless I wanted to do .....something or other, I forget what it was, something technical sounding. Anyway, I've avoided using port #1, and all is well. I suppose you've tried hooking up to different ports? Just a thought.

I hope you get it working without too much more fuss. It's kind of cool to stand in the same room with the bot from your other computer, and listen to the lag in the sound effects from one comp to the other. It's also a good way to see how that new skin looks to the other players.

Thanks for the ideas nameless. Port #1 is the uplink spot on the router. We tried plugging the 2 computers into different spots on the router and still a no go. Could it possibly have something to do with only having one IP address assigned from the modem? Do you have 2 IP address nameless? I was thinking that the IP thing could possibly be the problem but it is hard to tell when you only got one IP to play with. There is the option to get another IP address with the cable service but they are asking for another 10 bucks a month to do this and I don't think my friend wants to cough it up just to play UT on 2 computer whenever I show up over there (usually only once or twice a month). If anybody else can think of anything, let me know.

|<idcapri

Sounds like you may have hit on the problem Kid... Shared IP addy! I think the cable companies figured this out a while ago... LAN's hooked up to cable modems. This is why they charge $ for additional IP's. Those money grubbing bastards. Funny though, my ISP charges me only $5 for additional addresses.

torporategreed

Crap I just posted a big answer and lost it somehow. Very hard to type this twice. I have 1 IP address. I've run 5 servers off 1 machine on a lan with up to 4 PC's on it before with out lag. So, yes it can be done. First thing about the lag. Remove the server name from fav's on both PC's. using the locateLAN games tab, add your game back to fav's. Open your udp ports on the firewall from 7777-27900. Start the game and set it to run dedicated and check in the box for playing a LAn game. Click dedicated. Now start the game again but this time search for the game in your favs just as on the 2nd PC. That should do the trick for you whether you play lan or internet. Remove the check from lan box if playing on the internet. Make sure if you are using the router, (sorry, haven't read the thread in a while) that you have the latest firmware upgrade especially if its a linksys. I have the BEFSR41 just like nameless. It didn't work for the 1st half year till I updated the firmware. That fixed more than half of all of my problems.

Hermskii

Uh yeah, what Herm said. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I only have one IP. I don't understand how the ISP can know you're using more than one comp when you're behind a router. Although my brother noted that his ISP was trying to look at his ports to see if he had more than one computer hooked up. It caused him some problems with his router, until he complained to his ISP. They backed off. I believe he did a firmware upgrade, and changed the password for his router. I didn't know such things as a password for a router existed, but this is what he went through. Maybe it's your ISP that is is messing you up too?

Hey Kid sorry this has taken so long but I have had my hands full with the kids. I just played both of my machines on CG's and I got pings in the low 100's. I'm guesing the problem isn't the router. Maybe you missed something simple when you set the whole thing up. I couldn't tell you how many times I have done somehting like that.

Got another one of my friends that has cable and 2 computer +router to try and run UT on both machines and was able to get on the same server with both with 100-125 ping on both. Guess there is alot more digging to be done........I'll keep ya posted whenever we finally fix the problem.

|<idcapri

I've got the same router and the wife and I play the same server all the time. Are you useing the DHCP function of the router? Also I've found that one person must completely join the server before the other can join ( strange but true LOL ).

DigiHutMIke
