OK, I know many of you don't have high end equipment but many of you do. This was a hot topic here about 2 years ago and now I think many of you can try this since video cards gotten much cheaper. If you decide to attempt the instructions on the link below, be sure to follow these steps first, just in case something goes wrong. For your current installation's safety, do this:

Rename your UnrealTournament folder to UnrealTournamentOriginal. Now, reinstall UT to the default location. Install the 436 patch to it and bonus packs 1,3 and 4. Then proceed with the instructions on the link below at your own risk. If it fails or if you just don't like it, delete the new installation of UT and rename the UnrealTournamentOriginal back to UnrealTournament. Tada! Now you're right back where you started.

I have the G-Force4 ti4200 128mb vid card. My D3D FPS is around 90-140 normally. My OpenGL FPS is 59 steady and the picture is awesome. Not perfect, but awesome. Many of you will actually gain FPS using OpenGL. Tell us how well it worked for you if you try it. Thanks and here is the link I mentioned. Good luck!

www.planetclans.com/pc_articles.php

Hermskii

I saw this article about textures once before. Were we talking about it earlier?

When you mentioned deleting the newer installation of UT if it doesn't work out, did you mean just dump the new UT folder in the trash? Do not uninstall?

That's what I mean Nameless. Yes, there may still be files and reg settings left behind. I think this is OK because I've done it a million times and have had no trouble. If you trash the new folder that doesn't work and for some insane reason uninstall UT, I think it will actually get the remaining files even from the registry now that I think about it.

Hermskii

I remember when we all started to going with OpenGL. We were playing Ariza alot and Deck17r. I can't remember who told me about OpenGL -- probably Salmo Salar. Shady (remember him?) also switched to openGL. The difference in picture quality was amazing.

Thanks for bringing this back up, Herm. When I reinstalled UT, I forgot to redo the compressed textures and openGL.

M

Wouldn't it be easier to back up your UT folder somewhere? Then if the changes don't work out, just copy the old folder overtop the changed one, or delete the changed one and bring back the old folder? The file associations (or whatever they're called) would be preserved, wouldn't they? I'm sure I've done just that with some other less important game somewhere, sometime.

I'll say this for D3D. It's not quite as pretty as 3dfx GL, but it's not dark either. Places that seemed impossilbly dark on the 3dfx GL machine are brightly lit under D3D.

Yes Nameless, the way you say is the same thing I think. You say to back it up. I said to rename it, (same thing really). you said if it doesn't work to just over write with the back up. I said to just rename the original back to the original name, this still has the same results. So all in, YES. either way does the same thing through slightly different methods.

Hermskii

...the old refresh rate bug hit. I assume that the refresh rate fix is still out there. I just hate having a 21'' screen and only use two thirds of it. Anyone know where I can find this?
The Jargonaut

Jarg, Did you ever get it worked out on that big screen? Dead Sun, There are some 470mb of these textures that you are looking for. I think the best answer would be just to actually buy a retail copy. I've that they are going as low as $10.oo in some places. Secondly, do you have AIM? If so, I can set my PC to trust you and I can put them in a folder where you can FTP them to yourself. Your call buddy!

Hermskii

Not yet. The refresh rate bug is where the refresh rate of UT is always set at 60 hz. No matter what you do, you get 60. I have a fix somewhere, but I'm not sure where it is. I'll let you know.
The Jargonaut

So do you play in full screen mode or not? When you do play, how do you know your frame rate? I know how to tell, I'm just asking if you do? If you do, is it stuck on 60?

Hermskii

For frame rates, I just time demo statistics. I physically can not tell the refresh rate, but this is a known bug in UT. There is a fix for it out there. I can tell that the refresh rates are different because I run my monitor at 85Hz. When UT starts up, there are quite large places to the sides of the screen full of nothing but black. There is also a noticeable high speed flicker of the screen. This flicker has caused more that it's fair share of headaches in it's time. 60 Hz refresh rates give me a headache, and are not too desireable.
I do play on full screen mode, BTW.
The Jargonaut
