I remember the 80's andd all that hate pretty vividly. Can't say I really cared about Californians either way, but being a 'native' was a very important thing to me at the time. One thing i will say...is that for all the culturally superior banter Seattleites spew...they are unfortunately VERY racist, just in very subdued ways. 'Save the forest...but get rid of the drunk indians'.<br>Man I was even a racist and bigot when i was growing up...art was my savior thank fuc*ing god. Only until I left the NW did I realize that it was SOO narrowminded. Other reasons for me leaving were more obvious than otheres, like being 18! And granted I really miss the NW, it has to be the most beautiful place I have ever lived. But I will never go back there. Just for the reasons that that article was written for. And the only thing I think the writer was off about was his distinction between western and eastern washington. I went to WSU and found that area fo the NW to be even more racist than any place I have been in ANYWHERE! When i came to Missouri i though 'Oh god...klansmen and racists will be everywhere'...quite the contrary. Kansas City in particular has some of the most openminded people I have had the luck of being a part of. The art community alone excells beyond Seattle, Chicago, and St. Louis in so many ways. The other thing that drove me from the NW was the growth. Just going back this xmas and driving around, it may as well be San Francisco.
