Thanks for that link, Scify.

Now that the Canadian dollar is hovering around par, it is actually practical for me to use such a website.

I've also been checking out the Dell user forums. It seems my 250W p/s has a peak output of 345 watts, so should be adequate for my needs. If it isn't I was happy to discover a place that will sell me a 400W p/s that will drop right into this proprietary case. (www.pcpowerandcooling.com)

Now the temptation is to buy the p/s, then get whichever card I want, and to hell with my budget. :cyclopsani:

Hey Nameless, Damn, I just lost a whole page I typed. The short of it is this. I have a Sapphire X800 GTO that is AGP, has the last 4 pipelines already open so that is 16 fully functional pipelines, it is the 256mb DDR2 version and some other good stuff. I'd mildly consider selling it for around $100 US. Just a thought. Not a promise. Just a thought. It works fine but I hate the drivers that have to be used with it. It is quiet, cool and looks and runs awesome. I'm simply going to have to buy a newer PC and finally get on track with PCIe or get a supremely stronger AGP card like a decked out Nvidia BFG card! Later!

Well I went with the X1650 Pro that I got a such a good deal on. It installed fine, and I have put the very latest drivers for it in. It's an 8x AGP card running on a 4x mobo, but then the 9800 was 8x too. It seems happy with the power supply I have, so no need to upgrade, as I would have had to do with that BFG card, for sure.
All games tested run fine so far. For some reason I had to go into the Open GL section of UT99's preferences so that I could re-enable gamma adjust, but that was the only glitch found so far. UT 99 otherwise runs the same as ever.

I kind of wish Dead Sun's Missile Madness was still running. I would have been able to tell immediately on some of those maps whether or not I could fly a strangelove any better or not. When the 9800 Pro replaced the 9700 Pro, I noticed a small but significant improvement in manoeuvrability.

I guess I'm as ready as I'll ever be for UT3. I've heard that there is going to be some sort of "extended" version available. Does anyone know what that will be?

Well maybe I spoke too soon.

Last night UT99 crashed me out to a blue screen of death that warned me to watch to see if it happens again. Error message ATIKVMAG.dll

Today when I started up the computer I left it while it was booting. I returned to find a small window on the desktop advising me that the system had recovered from a serious error. The error log seemed to trace back to some of my temp files??? Hmmmm? :sad8:

I finally did it! I got rid of every piece of crap ATI device in my PC! A couple of days ago I grew pissed about my ATI TV Card not being synced with the sounds and the video (about a 1/2 second delay) that drove me nuts. Expressions didn't match the voice or the mouth movement. Then I was mad at my scores in 3DMark.

I went with Matrix to a place here in Houston and bought a Happauge WinTV card and it works great. I installed it and it worked right on the first try. Then I replaced my ATI X800 GTO video card with a BFG Nvidia GeForce 7800GS OC which was the fastest AGP card I could find from Nvidia. I installed it and shattered my 3DMark records.

I hate ATI. I love Nvidia. One video card. One driver. The way the game is meant to be played. NVIDIA!

What did you pay in US$ for your new video card Nameless? I paid $229.00 with a $70.00 mail in rebate. So I paid $160.00 really.

3DMark 2001 SE: 13,835
3DMark 2003: 7,234
3DMark 2005: 5,289
3DMark 2006: 2,520

AVG frame rate in UT is about 170FPS when set at 32 bit at 1024 X 768.

I'm on a:
ASUS A7V8X (VIA KT400 chipset)
Sempron 3000/MP processor
BFG GeFORCE 7800 GS OC Overclocked Video Card
1GB 2700 DDR RAM
7200 RPM 8mb cache 120gb Seagate HDD
Sound Blaster Audigy 2 Sound Card
Some other non important stuff too.

I have since learned that the error message I saw on boot up was a reference to the BSOD I got during the previous session.

The problem has not happened again.

I paid $129.95 Cdn for the ATI X1650 Pro. That works out to about the same in US currency at the moment. It was the best deal I could find on a vid card with the specs it has. One important consideration was the power requirement for the new card. 300 Watts is fine, 350W is pushing it just a bit, and 400W+ means a new power supply. The BFG's I saw that were out of my price range anyways, all wanted 400 Watts. The X1650 Pro said 350W on the box, but the instructions inside said it wants 300W. :cyclopsani:

I think it is the NVidia 7800 GS that is either the equivalent of the ATI I bought, or one step up. I didn't see any NVidia's on sale at a competitive price. My online surfing for cards found none either. I saw no references to a rebate either.
I'm sure in January or February some nice NVidia card will go on sale, but I sure wasn't about to sit and wait.
Just for fun I also checked out prices on 9800 Pro's, but they are expensive as hell now that they are used in Mac's. :faroah:

I'm waiting for UT3 fixes to be put into the next set of ATI drivers. When I see that happen, I will d/l the new drivers.
(We're all going to be giving UT3 a try, aren't we?)

To be honest, I would rather have bought the NVidia 7800 GS. It has already been reported as working ok in Dell 8200's at the Dell forums. But unfortunately time and money worked against me.

I'm really loving this new stuff! and you're absolutly right , ATI isn't the way to go at all! and if anyone else is thinking up grade, get Nvidia cards, and intel chips over AMD, much better bang for the buck from what I've read and heard from the dude's at Fry's. I've got my stuff slightly overclocked and its very easy to tweak and tune with the Gigabyte board

Current -

Mobo= Gigabyte S-series ,GA-P35-DS3L -supports dual and quad core intel chipsets
RAM-4 gigs crucial DDR2 PC2 6400
power- coolermaster 500 watt extreme power
CPU- 2.33 intel dual core w/1333 FSB 4 mb cache - Oc'ed at 2.80
Video- BFG 9600 GT OC ! 512MB DDR3 - 700/1765/1000

UT3 benchmarks around 140 with ut3 benchmark utility

Nice to have something to tinker with now that it's
stinking hot as he88 outside

later all !

Chef
