Well renewal time was here again as of the 15th of January. I did my homework, and found that Norton was no longer "supporting" NAV 2003. Not that their support is any good anyway, according to my research. And I was damned if I was going to pay for their updates a fourth time, when it turns out that NAV 2003 is incapable of scanning RAR files, amoungst others, but does not tell you that. Furthermore, NAV 2006 is reported to be even more of a resource hog that 2003 ever was.
Other products are reported to be better, but you must pay for them all over again each year also.

So I decided to go with a free anti virus product.

The latest discussions seem to favour AVG Free and Avast! as the best of the free AV scanners, with a bit more favour going to the former. I have been using AVG Free on my old Win 98SE computer for some time, and agree that its interface is quite clunky. Avast is reported to have a better email and Instant Messenger filter, as well as a better resident shield. It also has a much nicer user interface. AVG on the other hand, has slightly better "test" results.

So the solution was easy. I did a full install of Avast as my main anti virus program, then installed AVG Free without its resident shield or email scanners, to avoid conflicts. This way I get the best of both worlds. Avast scans my email and Instant Message traffic, while its resident shield works quietly in the background. And I have AVG Free available for "on demand" scanning any time I wish.

That's great Scify, do what works for you.

One reason I went with the free AV programs is that those kinds of rebates are only available in the U.S.A.
I was watching, but this year Norton has not had any kind of rebate program going at all up here. I also got tired of going to their website, and manually downloading the latest definition files. Because after I got them, I had to reset the date on my computer to before January 15th so that the program would think that my subscription was still valid. :evil1:

I think that what I have now is a little more secure, and completely above board. :happy2:

I usually wait until the new version of norton comes out, and then purchase a used copy of the previous year's edition on ebay. Works out to about $10.

I stopped paying for Norton about last year sometime. I have everything on AVG now and have had no issues. I'm happy. It's easy and it's free.

I haven't tried any of these, don't need 'em as my cable vendor supplies the full McAfee suite with their service.
If you download any of these PLEASE scan 'em before opening and/or using.

This is a link to some current sources to um....er....uh sample some of the software.

The balance are a few I searched out that looked promising. Don't know if the links are still alive or not. They usually expire after about 30 days.

Symantec Norton Antivirus Corporate 10.00.00

Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition provides scalable, cross-platform virus protection for workstations and network servers throughout the enterprise. Enhanced security features plus centralized policy management enable administrators to manage client and server groupings logically. In addition, administrators can create, deploy, and lock down security policies and settings to keep systems up-to-date and properly configured at all times. The centralized management console enables administrators to audit the network and identify which nodes are unprotected, and determine which nodes are protected by Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition, or Computer Associates, McAfee, Panda, Sophos, or Trend Micro antivirus products. This function allows administrators to proactively secure unprotected nodes before an event can occur, ensuring system uptime and user productivity. Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition provides backend response mechanisms that enable the delivery of fast, reliable, and hands-free virus detection, analysis, and repairs. Even in the face of unusually heavy demand for virus definitions during serious outbreaks, Symantec's scalable architecture ensures that virus cures will be readily available when needed most. Infected clients and network servers are cleaned quickly and efficiently via on-demand, enterprise-wide virus sweeps initiated from a centralized console. NAVEX, a single, extensible scanning and repair engine, provides the unique ability to upd virus definitions and engine extensions - without having to reboot servers or re-deploy application software, thereby easing management and minimizing the cost of ownership. To enhance speed, the solution includes reduced virus definition file sizes and multi-threaded server rollout. And for extra security, LiveUpdate technology enables administrators to configure automatic upds for virus definitions, including upds for out-of-date definitions.

With all the free stuff out there, why would anyone use a cracked version of anything?

I think I'm well protected by what I have now, and I practice safe computing habits, which means I won't be clicking on any of those links. :tongue5: :toothy3:

Can you find Spyware X-terminator by Stompsoft? I have it installed but don't have the install. A friend wants it. I think it's OK but not all of that.

Probably not. But I'll look around if you know which version it is.

You know the trial version/s can be downloaded at Stompsofts web site. One might be able to extend the trial period by:

1) Set the clock/calender ahead (including that in the bios) to something like January 1st 2008.

2) Install the trial version software.

3) Set the clock/calender back (including that in the bios) to something the actual date.

Might work or might not. I know it used to work with other softwares.
