I have this whole thing posted on a thread here already but I thought it was good enough to share as a stand alone thread. I hope nobody minds.

For those that don't know the story from back then:

Back in the old days the only real Redeemer Arena was called Schwantz's Redeemer Arena which is otherwise known as SRA. We had a ton of regs and a ton of maps but we weren't really getting any new blood (noobs) to fight against and we were getting tired of the same results with the same players night after night after night. Don't get me wrong. It was fun but after a couple years of nothing but the same people, it can get slow. Part of the issue was the large amount of custom downloads (Maps, Voices, Skins, Textures, Music, Sounds) on the server and back then, no one knew how to use redirects so they took FOREVER.

I asked Shwantz if he'd mind giving me a copy of the mod he was using. I told him I wanted to make a training grounds of sorts for noobs to learn on and then I'd send them to the slaughter house called SRA. He said sure and sent me the mod.

I built the server and used nothing but default maps so no one would have to download anything to play. They would get in instantly on their first try. I had a message that told the new players that if they could ever beat me, I'd direct them to the playing fields of the real Redeemer Arena pros. I told them that they would have to stress it was a qualification round so I would know to try hard as I used to be pretty good back then but I didn't play every single round like a championship round. So they would say they were going for it and I would go for it too. So if you won, you knew and I knew that you won fair and square!

As people would beat me I would have them email me and I'd send them the name of the SRA Server and Forum. The plan was great and worked great except for two things. The first problem was that they would finally go to Schwantz's Redeemer Arena and they would get totally owned by the regulars there because they didn't ever play on many of the custom maps that Schwantz ran so they were at a huge disadvantage. That would cause problem number two which was they would all come running back home to CG with their bloody noses where they could continue to own all of the noobs.

Eventually, I started banning players who had beaten me to force them to continue their efforts on Schwantz's server but many had legit complaints being they were 56kers and the maps cycled so fast at the SRA server that they couldn't download the maps and additional files before it cycled and they'd get disconnected and not have any of the files that they had been downloading for 10 minutes. Others just hated that after finally making the grade they would get knocked back down to being a freshman on the SRA Server by the Senior players. They hated it so much that they refused to play there.

I removed the bans and just let everyone play at CG. Schwantz had started new work and wasn't wanting to keep the level of focus on his server that he had maintained over the past several years so he shut SRA down leaving CG with the torch for the time being. SRA has been back up a couple of times as Schwantz has had time and serveral other servers running this mod have come and gone over the years too.

To this day, I still think it was a great plan and had I known then what I know now, players like "Amtaham" would have been banned for good and the system would work well. I'd do it again but I too like Schwantz have more pressing matters being life in general so I'll leave my stuff the way it is for now. You new server admins might use this method though. The mystery of a greater place to play such a fun game will always draw in curious players hell bent on making it to the next level. Later!

I think the real history is in this finely crafted article. Still gives me a chuckle to read it.

How are you all doing? The renos at Schwantzland are almost finished. 4 months of &%^$# renos. New floors, new bathrooms, new paint, granite countertops, crown moulding, paint , electrical and many other expensive doodads. Does look nice tho...

I bought a new videocard. Nvidia 7800 GT and it plays all the new games fine but sux on UT99. I'm hoping to reappear on CG soon but so far it works like crap on the old games.. Might be the new AMD dual-core processor as well..

Anyhow, I hope you all are healthy and I hope to try and kick Mah's ass soon..

dang, dual core? You don't need that to watch porn on your computer!

Good to hear from you Schwantz! That interview is funny. I can't believe how much time everyone put into the longest running joke in the online gaming world. One of my first formative experiences online was doing a double-penetration on a Nali cow with Skank in the hills of Ariza.

I'm glad that your RollsRoyce techmology is keeping you off UT99. There is some irony floating around in that. :bom:

We want to build a second level on our house. Is it cheaper to import labo(u)r from the north?

Mah

As I never did before, I thought I had to thank you Scwantz for the huge idea you had in creating our actual deemer dope !
Unfortunately I missed the start of that story but 2003 was still a real good year to enter the SRA hoiuses (NWRO, Kid's and CG)

Thanks again for all the pleasure and fun we can daily "eat" now !!!

btw Herm, the "family was sad yesterday : CG was down and I found some people for a while on clanDOU's deemer but... couldn't beleieve that, while we were 4/5 playing it... crashed too !!!

Orphans went I don't know where... I sniped a bit... :(

Heya Rob!

Good to see ya here again. Well, I am running a dual core Opteron 180 and only use a 6600GT (PCI-E) - hehe. I get about 160FPS on UT 99 (High detail, 1600x1200). That's just fine for me.

DeadSun gave me all his MissileMadness files for UT99. It'll be up in a couple of days. Can't wait to fly those planes again ...

Rob you need to find a shitty old box and slap UT99 on it and bring back SRA. Taking all the players back from CG shouldn't be that hard. I miss the good ole days when you could cuss on a server. Taunting folks just ain't the same when {expletive deleteed} appears every 2 seconds. I mena what's the point of playing.

As a matter of fact I think Kid and Bo should both get there servers back up. The people demand more choices. It's like being stuck with Windows. Ya don't see anything else out there so ya just deal with what ya got. It's very distressing.

Andy are thinking of putting together a server as well?

P.S. perhaps we should do a follow up to that article.

Agreed! We need more choices and this Server Nazi isn't going to budge. Well, actually I was considering putting up another practice type server but it would once again only have nothing at all but standard maps on it. That said, this isn't really another choice.

What will the solution be folks? Micky was going to make a server but it was StrangeLove only I think. The new MapVote can let you choose between game types. He could run both. I don't since I'm not really too big of a fan of StrangeLove.

Kid was talking about maybe lighting up his server late in the year. That is now BTW Kid. Bo can dust off his too. His server had the biggest cult following of all I think. I'm even interested in seeing new maps. Finally, there is SRA. What can I say? That would be too cool.

C'mon mannnn! Do it! The people have spoken.

I am going to revive DeadSun's MissileMadness (UT'99),

That's 1 up! How did your visit into UT2004 go with that mod anyway? Was it as different as Redeemer Arena was in UT2004?What does this mean for Mickey's StrangeLove effort?

Who's next to respawn like a Fiery Phonix? (Insert Final Jeapordy music here)
