So, I try this little program. I find the 'download' which I am looking for, and proceed to run it. Well, it didn't do what it was supposed to do. Instead, I now have a never-ending stream of pop-ups (even when I am not using my web browser). I have tried the following methods of removing the problem:

1. deleting the downloaded files
2. running SpyWare Blaster on panic mode.
3. running Spybot Search & Destroy (about 15 times)
4. running Ad-Ware 6.0 (about 15 times)
5. I have run regedit to find and delete the file entry (which #2 and #3 couldn't seem to remove) (it now no longer shows up when running the spyware removal scans.

I STILL GET THE @#$%^!!!! POP-UPS!!!!
I can't run ANYTHING now without being interruped by some stupid pop-up screen. How can I end this madness (short of a re-format of my hard drives)??!!! Bugger this!!!!

Weird I didn't get any of that. Though I do run a scan on all downloads prior to opening them. That might not have been the exact same site I got mine either.

Here is the actual home page for this item it is probably cleaner there. I'll edit my 1st post to this url.

Hey Mortis, that sux. Someone here mentioned that the Microsoft Anti-Spyware program faired pretty well. I think it is a beta but I hear it works really well. I think Nameless knows something about it as well as Fluffy. Good luck. I hate to say it but I'm glad it happened to you before I got the program and tried it. The one I use is the one he mentioned before this new one. It has come in handy for me once already bigtime! For the record, can you tell us what you were downloading. I don't think it was the program that you used to get the program that you needed. I just think you got a bad link or something.

I just tried it four more times with outstanding results. No problems. You have a choice for it to search out cracks or serial numbers. Do you have any idea how much trial software is avalible that there are cracks and serials to fully activate? Well it's a S**t wagon full I tell ya.

A small taste. Not all can be cracked but many can.

Skank, are you sure the program itself doesn't contain spyware or doesn't itself hijack your puter? I've visited many a site that this proggy must also be visiting, and they are always the worst when it comes to trojans etc. I'm interested in this downloader-- is it better than going to astalavista?

I feel bad for you Mort. But I have to admit that there's something kinda funny about it too. It's like a guy takes a buddy to a brothel but hooks him up with the wrong girl ... lol!

I know the sites you reference they are all notorious for pop ups and trojans. This tool skips much of that trouble. As I said earlier "I scan everything I download before opening" its the world we live in. I can not express just how pleased I am with this new tool. I've tested it, used it and tested it again and I can't get it to booger up on me.

Enjoy, Skank

I was too chickenshit to even click on the original link out of curiosity. I guess I'm glad I was; but sometimes I wonder just how much I am under-using this computer of mine. There must be a whole world of software out there that I'm not even aware that I need, judging by the reported "shit wagon load" of stuff out there that is cracked. :compress:

As far as Microsoft's Anti Spyware Beta program is concerned, I consider it another useful tool to use against spyware, but it has only found something once or twice. Surfing with Firefox and using Spyware Blaster seems to do a remarkable job of keeping stuff out. Lately Microsoft, Spybot, and Ad-Aware are finding nothing to root out that I picked up surfing the web. On my old computer that does not have Spyware Blaster installed, Spybot is finding stuff that Ad-Aware misses. A while back it was the other way around. I continue to use all of them on my new computer, it seems to be prudent, and has worked out well for me so far. :faroah:

So...about 20 hours later (after numerous scans, rescans, deletions, registry edits, etc....), I still have the same problem. I can't even type this post without having several popup screens stopping me. Looks like the only way out will be a reformat.

A) Download FireFox as an alternate browser. What ever you've picked up is probably IE specific. And FireFox will allow you to surf and post with ease in the interim.
http://www.freedownloadhq.com/Firefox.html

B) Hey Morty, I have had my teat in the proverbial wringer more than once myself. This place has worked miracles with the greatest of ease.

C) Open an account at this forum
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/ubbthreads.php

D) Before you start
You should have installed the latest updates on your computer, eg Windows XP users should have installed Service Pack 2. If your operating system is not up to date, we may not be able to help.

Please don't run an anti-virus check or spyware removal tool immediately before running the HijackThis program. This may make it more difficult to analyse your log. However, at all other times, you should update these programs and run them on a regular basis.

Installing HijackThis

1) If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from here:

HijackThis
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/files/Merijn/hijackthis_sfx.exe

2) Double-click on the file you've just downloaded and click on the UnZip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\HijackThis\ folder by default.

3) Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, Notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in Notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

4) POST the log in your existing thread by clicking Post Reply in the top right of my post, or if you have not posted a Hijack This Log before, by clicking Post in the Top left of the Hijack this forum

5) In the data-entry window, press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis and click the Post Reply button.

6) Any follow up postings should be made as replies to your original thread. If you can't find your original post, go to Who's online in the links at the top, click your username, and click Show All Users posts. This will bring up a list of your posts, find the appropriate post and click the link.

7) The HijackThis helpers on this forum are volunteers, so please treat them with respect. If there is a delay responding to your post, please be patient. Do not send your HijackThis log to helpers or moderators in a private message.

Good hunting, Skank

Thanks for the path through the woods (so to speak). Posting completed. Awaiting responses. In the meantime, I am trying to rescue my files in preparation for a reformat.

Mort,

Before you reformat, try the HijackThis program that Skank recommended. It sounds like your browser has been hijacked. IE is pretty vulnerable to this kind of thing.

Also hit Ctrl-Alt-Delete and see what is running in your task manager. Anything there that looks suspicious?

You might just go into your internet settings under tools, internet options, privacy, popup blocker settings and set it to high. Then no pop ups will be allowed unless you press the control button at the same time or something like that. Give it a shot.

Already set like that. I don't even have to be using the web browser for them to start popping up. I could be doing anything (like using Microsoft Word or burning a cd, etc). When I use the browser, they increase in frequency. The guys at HijackThis replied, and said they would look into it shortly. I might just end up doing a reformat and/or installing a larger hard drive for the hell of it.
