I used that same router no problems at present. My compter like yours is hardwired and then there are two lap tops and two towers wireless.

Only problems I ever ran into was trying to set a couple of antique computers up to it wireless. Probably problom with their bios.

Really odd, you can get on line, surf pages, but can not hotmail, yahoo mail or do windows updates. Sounds like security settings maybe in the firewall or your WEP settings.

Last item, silly on my part but just in case, if your browsing / using Firefox you can not up date windows (only with IE).

Good luck

Maybe this will help

http://www.techsupportforum.com/archive/index.php/t-45603.html

http://hardware.mcse.ms/archive80-2005-1-130879.html

http://www.tech-forums.net/computer/topic/18780.html

One or two of those had the same problem and the info there cured it.

Just a thought but maybe you should try and hook your lap top directly (not wireless) and see if you can still pull down microsoft updates and hotmail/yahoo mail. Just incase there is something else going on.

Everything I read so far kind of indicates that the problem lay in the MTU settings. Try something like 1400 or 1454.

I'll keep looking. Good luck

Last night i had a live chat with support at linksys they suggested the same thing unfortunately i set the mtu to 1400 and refreshed settings...........Then i was locked out of the router had to do a reboot and set it back to auto detect they told me that the only thing left was to update the firmware so i did that and still have the same problem....... So im thinking that its a setting i have missed somewhere i have turned off the router firewall and that makes no difference now im compleatley stuck

Sorry nothing on Netgear here. Using a combination of Linksys and Datalink. Now that I think about it the unit with the data link has a hard time staying connected. Even with the better antenna I installed. Hummmm.........

If you have wireless encryption turned on, turn it off. Several " Messaging" programs ( and others ) don't play well with wireless security encryption. Just a thought.
