Hey Kid, I just tried to connect again and I got the slow EpicCustomModel file again. Here is why it happens and here is what you do to fix it. When you have a line in the UT.ini file for a server package like ServerPackages=EpicCustomModels you have to be sure that the case of the lettering in the name matches the case of the lettering of the same file you install to the redirect server. Thus in this case, you would need to make sure that your EpicCustomModels.u.uz file matched exactly as as the server package lists in your ut.ini .

Here is what the problem is. The UMOD for the bonus pack that installs this line into your UT.ini file puts the line in using caps but the actual file it puts into your UT\system folder is in all lower case. That is the same file you compressed and put on your redirect server. So, before you pull out your hair trying to figure this crap out, go to your redirect file and rename it using all lower case. Wait. Actually it is all lower case already. Go to your UT.ini file and make the line for that server package all lower case then reboot the server. Install UT again to your gaming machine, not the server but install it to a different directory than your player install. Apply the 436 patch to it too but none of the bonus packs. Make a shortcut from the UnrealTournamentFolderYouJustInstalledTo\system\unrealtournament.exe to your desktop. Rename it to test player. Start it and connect to your own server. Watch for the name of the first file that downloads too slow and then stop the game and the server. Go make corrections to that files server package line in the UT.ini file and then delete the cache folder and all of the temp.0001 files in the UT folder with the cache folder. Restart the server reconnect with your test player install. Continue doing this until you can connect to your own server with all of the files redirecting to you the fast way. I hate to say it but sometimes, the serverpackages line is right and the compressed file is wrong depending on the mod. In those cases, you have to try to match the file.uz name to the server package line. If you think this sux, just wait until you get a map that calls for a file called Texture.unr.uz and another map that calls for texture.unr.uz. that is a different size. Then you have to decide which map you like more because you can't have two files named the same thing in the same folder at the same time on a redirect server. (Shakes head sadly). Let me know if I didn't explain this well enough. If I did, I just saved you many many hours of frustration!

Herm,

Took your advice and did a super clean install with just the 436 patch and that was it. Fixed the Epic file before cranking up the fresh install and when I connected everything I checked seemed in order this go around. Even pulled the orginal Epic file from the system folder just to make double sure. Everything else came flying at me pretty quickly tho. Thanks for all the little heads up on this stuff. Been along time since I had to compress stuff I knew I was gonna miss something.

Peb,

Viridian is on the server. My server is set so when a map is played it disappears out of the list for a few maps. Keeps people from picking the same map back to back basically.

Anyways if anybody notices anything odd or a file not redirecting please let me know. To the best of my knownledge everything should work now. Just let me know.

SlithlessDeck2K1 is downloading at super slow speed. It was the first file it started to send. Please note that once a file fails to be sent from the redirect, all files after that will fail whether they are set up right or not. So, if you fix it properly, the rest may then download properly for that map. If some of those same files are used for other maps they will still download fast as long as all of the files are compressed and ready to go that are before them. Did that make sense?

You need to fix your TCowMeshSkins line in the server packages to match the case of the file of the same name in your system folder. It is downloading slow. The other file I mentioned earlier came down fast. Good job on it.

Good catch there Herm. God this stuff is a pain the the A$$. Thought the epic file was the only one giving me grief but here pops another one. I did get it fixed but that just baffles me how screwed up the file names get when you unpack a UMOD or two.

I did a clean install like you said on an earlier post with only the 436 patch. I figured that the install would have picked up on all the naughty files but so far that hasn't been the case at all. Everything except the Epic file shoot straight to me so I had not a clue that the TCow file was also at fault. Did I install too much somehow?

No you didn't install too much. Let me back up some first. When I told you to reinstall UT and apply the 436 patch on it, that wasn't for the server at all. I'm guessing that you have the server running from a different box all together right? If not that is ok too. I told you to reinstall the game but to a different folder than the server folder and a different folder than the one you play from. This way if you made the short cut and all like I mentioned above, you would now have a test player install. This would be the same as if I installed and patched up to 436 which is required to play on line now. So if your install is the same as if I was a noob that just installed and patched, then when you connect to your server, it would be the same as when I connect and you would get all the same errors that any new player that didn't install the bonus packs would get. Make sense? My servers run from a different box than the one I play and test on. So, CG runs from port 7737 and MHM runs from 7757. The computer I play from plays through port 7777 and the test install on that same computer also plays from port 7777. Running everything like this makes it so the two servers never use the same port and I can only play with one install at a time from my gamer machine being the player install or the test install so it doesn't matter they both use the same port since I can only use one install on my gamer box at a time. With my tester install, all I have is the game UT and patch 436 installed and NO bonus packs. Now, when I connect to either of my own servers, the will have to send me all the files so I can play. When a files comes down to me too slow. Ijust stop the server, fix the file reboot the server and delete (from the tester install) the cache folder and all of the temp.xxx files. Now, the test install is right back to being a virgin install again and I can connect to my server again a to see which file doesn't download properly next time and so and so on etc etc. Yes, it is a huge pain in the but which is why I prefer single file maps. The more files, the more chances for problems. You are going to have this problem with every .u file that comes in the bonus packs I'm afraid. Here is a list of most of the files that come in the bonus packs exactly as they are extracted:

BonusPackReadme.txt
BP4Readme.txt
CTF-Beatitude.unr
CTF-Cybrosis][.unr
CTF-Darji16.unr

DM-HealPod][.unr
DM-Malevolence.unr
DM-Mojo][.unr
DM-Shrapnel][.unr
DM-SpaceNoxx.unr
DM-Viridian-TOURNEY.unr
DOM-Bullet.unr
DOM-Cidom.unr
DOM-Lament][.unr
DOM-WolfsBay.unr
epiccustommodels.u
Factory.utx
InoxxPack.txt
Manifest.ini
Manifest.int
multimesh.int
multimesh.u
noxxpack.utx
relics.int
relics.u
relicsbindings.int
relicsbindings.u
SGTech1.utx
skeletalchars.int
SkeletalChars.u
tcowmeshskins.int
tcowmeshskins.utx
tnalimeshskins.int
tnalimeshskins.utx
tskmskins.int
tskmskins.utx
xutfx.utx

You only need to upload the .unr maps that you like, the .utx files and the .u files. So, make sure your server packages lines match what these say here or vice versa. I never can remember which one is right. Do what you did to the rest of them as what you did to fix epiccustommodels. You do not need to upload .int files or .ini files to your redirect server. Good luck. Isn't this fun! Let us know how it goes. If you are running everything from one computer, that is ok too but remember to change the default port for each install and make sure they are all at least 10 ports from one another such as if your server uses port 7777 then your test player needs to use port 7787 and your real player install could then use 7797 or 10 less than the server such as 7767. Keep all the installs 10 port numbers away from each other.

Thanks for all the detailed information bud. My server install is on a machine by itself and my player install is on my big PC. I did a secondary install of UT in a different folder and just applied the 436 patch and that was it. Everything I tried out and tested seemed to work with the new install so far but before you mentioned the TCow file not working right my new install never had to download it in the first place which I find awfully odd to say the least. I cleared the cache stuff and temp files out and for the heck of it even took the TCow file that was sitting in my Textures and System folder completely out. It connected and downloaded with no problem but I did fix the naming stuff before I had reconnected.

Its been so long since I had to worry with all the little files and stuff and the whole compression thing too so all the help is wonderful. So far map wise I've only had trouble out of two maps out of about 80 or so I can't complain there. Hopefully this weekend sometime I'll be able to go over the server with a fine toothed comb and make sure there isn't anything else file wise that might be giving me grief.

BTW I've also still got that old rapid fire sniper mod already installed on the server so if anybody has an itch for some sniper action this weekend let me know and I'll crank it up for awhile. It's the same gun I had running back almost a year or so ago (might have been longer.....can't remember).

Like I said before if somebody notices a file coming down the pipe slow or the server is just plain acting up give me a yell.

Thanks for all the great input so far and thanks for the help and reminders Herm. Glad to have a great admin around with a WHOLE lot of knowledge about this game (it's either that or I'm just to wasted trying to run a gaming server LMAO). :)

P.S. Just saw your comment about that deck map Herm......will take care of it right now.

I was at a loss for trying to understand what is going wrong so I made another install of UT. I patched it up to 436. I went to www.unrealtournament.com and got their copy of the Bonus Pack 1. I extracted the files from the umod to see what the system files looked like and sure enough, they are named using nothing but lower case except for the manifest file which you don't need to use for redirects anyway. Then I installed the bonus pack to the new install of UT. I started and stopped the install between each step of all of this to make sure it saved properly. After the bonus pack was installed and after I ran a practice session once, I shut it down and went to the unrealtournament\system\unrealtournament.ini file to see how the server packages were listed now that they would show the lines added by the bonus pack. They were there as they were supposed to be except that the server packages names used caps instead of all lower case. A huge mistake on their part for people who want to use these files on servers. At this point, one of two things has to happen in order for the server packages to be pushed out (downloaded to) new player connections:

1. Each of the server package lines has to be modified to be the same case as the compressed file of the same name on the redirect server or...

2. Each compressed file's name on the redirect server would have to be renamed to match the same file name convention in the server packages lines for that file in the Unrealtournament\System\UnrealTournament.ini file.

I have always renamed the server packages line to match the file name because that way, I wouldn't have to rename the files in the server\system folder along with the files on the redirect server.

This brings my testing to a conclusion and to this point. Kid, I still get the EpicCustomModels file downloaded to me slowly.

Another note is that I don't know how you could possibly connect to your own server with a clean install that has only been patched and have it allow you to connect and download the needed bonus pack files based on the testing mentioned above unless:

1. You have installed the bonus pack to the test install or...

2. Hell, number 1 is the only way I think?

Check your server package line on the server. It still reflects EpicCustomModels yet the file on the redirect server is called epiccustommodels.u.uz

If this is true, then it is set up wrong still and you should set the server line to match the case of the redirect file name.

Whewwwww! I'm glad that might be over. I hate testing!

Sorry I don't know what version of the UT CD kidcapri has. But some of them already have the Bonus Packes added to the default installation CD. When I do a clean install, Bonus Pack 1, 2 & 3 are added automatick.

Just thought I would mention it!

Good point! I didn't even consider the game of the year edition and I think there is one more version that comes with one or more bonus packs and patches already installed. Very interesting...
