My sister-in-law was having computer problems. My wife donated my services in straightening them out. My suspicions were all correct. XP had never, ever, been updated and it had its fair share of viruses, trojans and adware. I did a quick a fix as possible on the bulk of viruses, trojans and adware. Next concentrating on installing all the critical XP updates. Got up to SP2 and half way through would get “Access Denied” and would have to start over.

Appears to be in the “Permission” settings for some of the registry keys.

Checked the SVCPACK.LOG and found vnd.ms.radio to be the culprit. With regedit I set the permissions to “Full” & “Read”.

Started XP2 again, another “Access Denied”. This time everything pointed to “audioCD”. Went to change the permissions on it but with no success. The message given “Cannot open .AudioCD: Error while opening key.”.

Well I’m stumped. Why could I change the permissions on one registry key and not the other one?

I have tried all the usual searches knowing that this can’t be a first and maybe help had been previously offered but to no avail.

Help please

That sounds like a really tough one Skank and not only that, you already did some stuff I would not have thought of. To me, I would think that the problem is she might be logged in as herself but that account might not be an administrator account. I would log in as the administrator of the machine and then do the updates. I know you're going to say her log in is the administrator but there is another account on that box where the username at login WILL BE Administrator. You have to hold some certain keys at boot up to get to it to do it. Log in under that account and retry the patches. Make sure also that one of the spyware programs you run against the machine is Spybot Search and Destroy 1.3 . Google to find how to log in as Admin on XP. Good luck buddy.

you CANNOT install SP2 over the top of an existing SP1 OSor it will fuck uphappens everytimeso make the important data safe...and then format and reinstall XPand then run the SP2 update...and all those will go awaySP2 works if it goes onto a brand new OS, but if its not a clean install that hasnrt been used, then it gets confused and screws all sorts of shit up12:41 AM 4/17/2005

I have actually had very good luck installing SP2 on existing/used XP/SP1 systems. Was a little scary the first time because of all the stories about people loosing their files and such.

I did think I was signed on as the Administrator but just incase I'll give it another shot. The smart money says my Sister-in-law won't know the password so I've done a little research for that scenario. Check it out and tell me if you think it will work.

Click "Start"
Click "Run"
Type "control userpasswords2"
Click "O.K."
Highlight "Administrator"
Click "Reset Password"

Thanks, Skank

It wouldn't let me reset the admin password so I re-installed XP as an upgrade. So far so good. Installed critical updates through SP2 will install the balance tomorrow.

If ya run into any more glitches do the three finger thing and then put your boot through it. :D
