Yep, the server box has bad sectors on the last Maxtor drive I'll ever buy. I'm having it replaced and will be building CG and MHM from scratch. Luckily I'm on vacation all of this week! The server is up right now but the PowerMax software urges me to back it up now since it reports it's about to totally fail. I'm not going to because I like the idea of doing it again from the beginning. I'll go and get another drive like the one in my player box. I think it is a Samsung or Hitachi or something. It is so quiet you can't tell when it's being written too and it's fast fast fast! I just wanted to give ya'll a heads that the server will be down soon for several days. I came in and found it locked up today and that is what got me wondering so I tested it to make sure and sure enough it FAILED! Later all.

I copied your post to DOU's forum since several of us there like your servers Herm!

Thanks a big bunch for keeping them going!

Cool, Thanks. BTW, this is the hard drive that is in my gaming machine right now. It is the one I love so much:

I have to admit though that I originally wanted this drive but it wasn't available fast enough so I bought the one above. What do you think about this origianl 1st choice drive:

I believe that Herm is running the old box that Schwantz sent over still for the server...so an upgrade to SATA may be expensive. :-)

This board doesn't have SATA at all. Hell, even my gaming machine doesn't have SATA. I don't need a better box for my needs anyways. The server rocks except for the Maxtor hard drives that have failed in it one after another.

From my limited experience I'd say go with the Hitachi. Back in the late '80's Seagates sucked and gave me more grief than I deserved, especially considering how much they cost back then. :-x

So this is what is in the server now:

http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 9381238289

I couldn't pass it up being in the end, it only cost me $60 with the mail in rebates. It is exactly what is already in my gamer box that I love so much but it has 40 more gigs than my gamer box hard drive. 8mb buffer, 8.5 second seek time, 160 gigs, 7,200 rpm, 3yr warranty, and ATA 100 compliant. What more could I ask for and only pay $60? Yeah baby!

Actually, no. Normally I would but that would mean having to rework my gamebox or copying everything from one to the other and all of that stuff. I'm sick as a dog right now (bummer on vacation too) so I haven't really been able to get anything done yet. Working on it right now but UT won't launch on the server for some reason. I smell trouble...

Hey Herm,

Have always been a Maxtor fan until lately. Problem I have run into at work (700+ systems) have to do with a specific run of Maxtor drives. Liquid bearings being the issue. I feel for you.

Feel better.
