You can put them in any way you want so long as the size maximum per slot is more than 512mb. So just put them all in and turn her on and see what it does. Don't spread them apart though. Put them in 1,2 and 3 or in 4 3 and 2 but don't skip memory banks like putting them in 1 ,3 and 4.

from what i know i can put 1 gig in each slot so the 512 i'm planning to buy should be ok and thx all for the advice

bought 2 sticks of kingston matched pair for £100 512x2

the sockets for the memory works as 1-3 2-4 for matched pairs wondered why they were in that config also colour coded

Hmmm got the new ram installed and it slowed the puter down not a lot but still slower any ideas if i take out the original ram it speeds up a little faster then it was windows reports that i had 1.5 gigs installed so it was recognised and working :?: i now have the 1 gig in so if i cant get the two lots working together properly will leave the 1 gig in and leave out the 2x 256 modules that means i have spare 512 worth of pc3200 memory at least ..

That happened to me when I took my old computer from 128 MB to its maximum of 384 MB.

I solved the problem by reviewing all of the programs that are started up during boot up and just sit there running in the background waiting to be used. Some of them can be real memory hogs. I turned off the ones I knew I didn't need, and the problem disappeared.
