Ok if i add more memory to this system do i have to put it in, in pairs or can i just put one stick in. The board is ASUS A8V Deluxe.

Well you can put a matching size in ( same Megs as what is in it now ) and double your RAM. Or pull the current one and get one RAM module the total size you want. The best route depends on how much you got and how much you want to have.

right now in it here theres 2-256 = 512 so do i have to put another 2-256 in or can i add 2-512 and have the 2-512 and 2-256 in together or wont it work???

NO it won't, all modules have to be the same size ( Megs ).

The sticks don't have to be the same size, just the same speed.

IE 2 Sticks of 256Mb at 133 MHz and 1 Stick 512Mb at 133 Mhz.

If you put in sticks with different speeds, it will either run at the lowest installed stick speed or not work at all.

for instance, I am running one stick of DDr 512MB PC3200VS at 400Mhz, I can add a stick of 256MB at 400 MHz if I want.

bad thing is my Mobo only supports upto 233 MHz so it runs at that..


I would check the Mobo specks to see what the top speed is that it will run, and what the largest size stick it will accept for each slot. If your 2 sticks of 256 are still good and pretty close to the top speed, I would just get a stick of the biggest it will accept (ie 512 mb) and slap it in slot 1, move your others over.

be sure to keep the largest stick in slot 1, then follow 2,3 to lowest stick.

I got two computer both have different speed old one has 100 - 64 ram second one is 133 -128 ram
New computer 2100 DDR 512 ram just add 2700 DDR 512 ramm.
I was told if you if you have 2700 DDR ramm then put 2100 DDR ram in it.It won't work.
So if you you start out low speed then put in high speed ramm it fine but u start out high speed ramm then put low spead it won't. I think was nameless or guy who me ramm.Please tell this is right.

That is pretty much right. Only EDO ram (5 years ago) had to be put in as matching pairs. SDRAM and DDR ram can be put in one at a time and togetehr with different sizes. Ususally it will slow down to slowest speed of your ram so 1 stick PC2700 plus one stick of PC 2100 and your system will run at 2100. Make sense?

What I don't understand is why neither Kingston or Crucial make any RAM that suits my Dell 8200. According to SpongeBob's upgrade site I must use RD RAM in matched pairs.

RD ram is supposed to be the best ram or at least it used to be. Very expensive too if I recall. Dell is slowly but surely going down the same nasty road that Compaq did in that you have to have a Dell componant to replace a Dell componant. I ran into this problem with a simple floppy drive just 2 weeks ago. Compaq was like that and still is now as HP. Mac has always been like this but somehow survived due to a cult like graphic following. Even Gateway has parts that don't interchange freely with other computers. I have a Compaq that I couldn't get ram for anymore, not even from Compaq! I used SDRAM. I bought Crucial PC133 cas 2 ram and all it would do when I put it in was beep at me. I hate to say it but it isn't just the speed, cas rating and parity that determines whether ram will work in a pc these days. Sad really. Early SDRAM days were when ram was at it simplest. Now thay have it all mucked up again. Now, it's as near as I can tell, determined by speed, cas, error checking, parity, voltage, gold tipped or not, and about 3 other options.

I have some crucial PC 133 cas2 ram that I bought 4 years ago. I have bought some more recently. The new stuff will run in certain machines but not the same machine that the original crucial ram is in yet the original ram will run in the new rams machine with the new ram. That means there is another factor other than the original three we all had to pay attention to when ram first came out in SDRAM form. See what I mean? It's just stupid.

Dell sucks that way, I agree. For $483, you can almost buy a new box from them by checking the deals on fatwallet.

Isn't RD-RAM also known as something like RAMBUS?

i was planning on buying the same speed i used crucial to tell me what is supported on my system just wasnt sure as to how they had to be installed ie :- in pairs etc right now there 2-256 in slot one and slot three so does that mean i should take them out put the new mem 512 in slot 1-2 and the ones i have now 3-4 or do i use 1-3 2-4 as pairs as u may of guessed i know nothing in this area
P.S the company i got puter from aint any help in this area they charge too much for support calls
