Gahhh.......... my game of UT 99 has crashed at least six times today on startup.
It always used to crash once in a while in the same way, but not like this. I think it may have something to do with the fact that I run the game in Open GL (with that improved dll file, v 26) and ATI's drivers for Open GL are apparently flawed? It also seems to be worse since I put in SP2 the other day? One other thing I noticed back when all this first started a couple of months ago, was that the game would be really really dark at startup sometimes, and I'd have to jump into a game online so that I could hit F11 a few times to bring the brightness back up to normal level.

Here's the error message I get: "The ati2dvag display driver has stopped working normally. Save your work (and etc.) ......... "
I even got the Win XP blue screen of death once today. Only the 2nd time I've ever seen it. It spoke of my ATI vid driver going into a perpetual loop.

When the game crashes my system, I drop to low res. 16 colours and have to reboot. :?

Does this mean I should go back to the fugly D3D? Am I going to lose my nice large textures too? :(

that sounds like fun!

is ut99 the only game it happens with? if it is, might try running the game with software rendering and see if it still does it.

as specified in scify's post, sp2 updates your direct x to 9c....and I am sure that is where your problems are coming from. You might have to play with your video drivers a bit, or just run it in software render....(easy way out.)

Well I've brought down the console, and typed in "preferences", but I'm damned if I can remember how to change from Open GL to D3D or Software Rendering for that matter. :?

in UT, goto the options menu, and select preferences, the first option should be a button to change video render, click that and UT will restart and let you change it.

or, just run the game in safe mode, and click the change video button.

Hehe, I must have been thinking of Unreal 1?

:? Of course you have to get the game to run before you can do anything. That could take several reboots. So after crash number one I went to ATI's web page and got their latest "catalyst" drivers, dated Aug 11, 2004. The drivers I'd been using were oldish. The installation process went as smooth as silk. I'm about to fire up the game and see if these new drivers with their crash protection work ok.

Oh yeah, and these latest drivers are supposed to fix an issue with UT2k4 too. And that's a good thing. :P

*Later* Everything seems back to 'normal'. :)
Oh yeah, the game still crashes, but they're the "normal" ones you see a lot. :|
