Nameless, if you haven't yet bought a DVD player, and if there's BestBuy in Canada, check out this hackable progressive scan player for $25 after rebate.

Thanks Mah, but I'm not sure if those rebates apply to Canadian customers, or even if Best Buy Canada stocks that model. We often do not get the selection that you guys down in the USA do. Anyway, it seems the unit is "get what you pay for", as some of the reviews on it state that it has some problems with heat and sensitivity to "dirty" discs.

The Best Buy here in town has knocked another $10 off of the sale price of a nice Sharp branded unit, $89.99 this week, or about $68 US. I think I'll go with this unit and pick it up tomorrow. I don't think I'll be needing to be able to "hack" my machine anyway. I do have a DVD writer in my computer, but don't expect I'll be making any "backups" of my DVD's. This Sharp unit plays most formats.

The only downside to all this is that my largest TV was bought in 2000, and does not have even an "S" video jack. Only the composite. I'm also wondering how I'm going to use both my VCR and the DVD player on the one TV. Will I need a switch box?

Lastly, thanks everyone for your suggestions on movies to buy. I have enough listed here to keep me broke for quite a while. :)

I'm such a retard. For some reason, I had Nameless living up in the Northestern United States like in Vermont or Pittsburg. I just now realized he's been saying he's in Canada. Doh. I'm so stupid.

You should have RCA jacks, and Video 1 and Video 2 on the TV. Use those.

Herm, you know I'm Canadian. You're just tired tonight. -Although I did once mention that my ancestors were from Pennsylvania. But they migrated up here in 1797, which makes me about as Canadian as you can get, eh.

Jarg, theres a set of 3 RCA jacks on the front of the TV, and one set of 3 on the back (with four others for sound), is that what you mean?

Yes. Though the image quality will not be as good as S-Video, it will be MUCH better that coax cable.

You may not make backups of your DVDs, but you may wish to view backups of other people's DVDs ...
