KB, since your mobo is old, the only gains you will see (besides the increase in capacity) will come from the 7200 rpms that are now standard. But that gain will be marginal, since your data will still be piping at 66, instead of 100 or 133 or whatever.

May be time to upgrade yer system!

I ordered the seagate 120GB hard drive that herm had mentioned. I agree mah I guess all I would need is a motherboard and chip set and use everything else. Maybe upgrade to a gforce128mb this summer along with a motherboard. I got my copy of xp today but will hold of installing until I get the new hard drive . I guess I could pop in the xp cd but I am not sure what steps to take after that. I was plaining on installing the new hard drive slaving it to the one I have in there now dumping everything onto the new hard drive than install xp on that one and ditch my old 20GB hard drive. Hopefully that works. When the new hard drive is installed do I format it and it's finished and what does partioning mean?. Is that something I have to do?. If I screw up I"ll have to answer to the wife..........

DON'T ditch the 20 gig. Install XP on the new drive. Slave the old. Move your info. Format the old. And Voila... 140 gigs of wonderful space.
Partioning is creating virtual hard drives on a single hard drive. I HIGHLY recommend it. For example:

C: should contain your OS and drivers. Make it say 15 gigs.
G: good name for a game only drive.
M: for music
and so on.
The toughest thing to remember is when installing software, you have to change the directories to where you install. because C: will get full.

XP makes it pretty simple to partition when installing. If you don't feel comfortable with doing it, it's okay. You will already have 2 drives for your two hard disk. Use the 20 gig for your games and the 120 for anything else you like... The possibilities are endless.

Here is a link to see how my hard drives are partitioned.

I would use the 20 gig as a swap file drive as it is slaved. I would leave the 120 as a complete C drive only. Pull out the 20. Put in the 120. Put in the xp disk, Format using NTFS. Install xp.(Very Easy). Once it's all good. Install 20 as slave. Copy everything over to 120. Format 20 using NTFS. Put fixed size swap file on it. Live long and prosper.

Bud, can you see that this stuff is like addictive. Herm is more of a pro at it than I am. I would have never thought of the swap file answer.
Now I have to try that out.
Thanks Herm :D

If the old drive is slower than the new drive, you may actually see a decrease in performance by putting the swap file on it. But I'm not sure about this.

Best thing, from my novice point-of-view, is to fix the swap file at 1.5X your ram for both min and max. Speed is lost when your system constantly changes the size of the swap file.

Then take your extra 20GB of space and turn it into a backup drive -- create an image of your perfect setup without all the stuff installed, and then another one with all your progs installed, and save them on the extra drive, along with your porn. If you main drive ever zaps out, you can re-image your whole set up back onto a new drive very easily. Saves a lot of time and hassle.

Man i'm confused now swap file?. I just wanted to use the 120gb and put everything that was on my old drive to the new one and remove it.It took 4 years for me to fill up the 20gb so having 120gb to me is huge I can somewhat understand what your saying but I never done this so I figured I would make it as easy as possible. :)

It means you need a SWAP file. No. I just kidding. I don't know actually. Sounds bad. I can say it's not the video card making the clicking sound. Good luck.

DOH... Sorry Bud. Pay no attention to us. This stuff can be addictive as hell once you start getting your feet wet. Trust me, if you are not confident that you can get yourself out of a situation with messin around with computers, then it's best not to mess with them in the first place.
Now if I practiced what I preached....

BTW, Bud, check your personal messages.
