Let me explain the whole thing.

After the mobo fried on the Dell, I tried to see if I could get it to work. I was not sure that the mobo was fried, but was pretty sure. Anyways, I had the cover off and was diddling around in the computer and restarted it. I realized that I had left the power supply to my Powerleap off. Powerleap is a converter from socket 423 to socket 478. It allowed me to run a faster processor in my computer. Anyways I, being the dumbass that I am, failed to turn off the main power supply before reconnecting the power wire to the Powerleap...... ZZZZZTTT... I got a spark. A power surge must have went in to the processor. It is dead, and surely so is the motherboard by now. What I did not realize is that the power spike also fried my RAM... That is 1 gig of PC-800 RAM... Around $1000 worth. Now, I have a new motherboard with worthless RAM. It is MUCH cheaper for me to replace the motherboard with a new one and new DDR RAM, which I will do tomorrow...
The moral of the story? I'll let you folks come up with that one. Please feel free to berate me as much as you like. I deserve it.

By the way, I have a GOOD Gigabyte motherboard for sale if anyone's interested..

Ouch Jarg! That hurt just to read. I doubt that the ram is bad. It is amazing the crap you can put a PC through and have it live and yet at the same time sometimes, you don't do anything out of the ordinary and one day it doesn't boot. Hmmmm. Good luck with the next box. Don't do whatever it was you did again this time. Keep the ram. Here is what you should do. Raffle it off at $5 a ticket. Once you've sold 200 tickets, have the raffle. Give the ram to the winner. When they say it's no good, give them their money back for their ticket. There I just gave you enough advice to make $995.00. There, now doesn't that feel better? Hehehe

Just got back from the local computer outlet. Got an Intel 845 mobo with 512 megs of ram. only around $160. Now to get this new box together :D

so what inspired you to basically put your old Dell (old Dell motherboard, 2.4 GHz P4 on PowerLeap, and RDRAM (4x256)) back together? I'm guessing the reason is that you were having problems getting the Gigabyte motherboard (Intel 850), 2.4 GHz P4 (without PowerLeap), and 1 GB of RDRAM to work together.

after the mishap with the PowerLeap power connection, I'd say the processor is most probably dead (though I'd still test it in a known good system to be sure; you may get lucky; remember to disconnect all power before you start working in the computer). the PowerLeap converter may not be so lucky but you won't need it unless somehow the Dell motherboard comes back to life.

about the RDRAM, I said last night something along the lines of "there's no telling for the RAM". the RAM may still be good or may be bad. it could be that only some of them are bad. you said last night that you tested them in pairs and they don't work. be sure to test all pair combinations with your 4 sticks (RDRAM needs to go in pairs, and the 2 sticks in the pair should be of the same memory size; RIMM 1 slot with RIMM 3 slot / RIMM 2 slot with RIMM 4 slot) and remember that all 4 memory slots on the motherboard need to be filled in order for RDRAM to work. put a test pair in RIMM 1 and RIMM 3 and the "continuity modules" go in RIMM 2 and RIMM 4. I'm thinking that you in fact have 4x256 (1 GB total) and no continuity modules (C-RIMM), so you may need to borrow some good 256 MB RIMMs and C-RIMMs to do the above testing. with 1 GB RDRAM, you could also have 2x512 and two C-RIMMs, though that is less likely. if it's really 2x512, then you'll need good 512 MB RIMMs and continuity modules to test that setup.

you said that you went and got new DDR motherboard and DDR RAM, but since you think the processor is dead, don't you need a new processor as well?

I purchased a new processor for the new motherboard. It works fine. The other one would not POST. It is fried.
I have FINALLY got the new rig up and running. It seems to run great so far. I am writing this from the new computer.
I'm glad I did not screw this one up :D

DAMN, This computer is GREAT. I am impressed at how fast it is. Screw the top of the line stuff, I'm going with year old technology from now on..... Except for video cards... and hard drives..... and........ :wink:

last year's technology is the way to go -- way cheaper and not much difference in performance.

Glad you are up and running. How many rigs do you have lying around over there now?

I had about 9 PCs but stripped them all this last weekend and now I'm down to three and one of those is already sold. I tossed the rest of them for one good reason or another. 4 small CopyPlus 5000 sheet boxes have all the parts and two PCs are up on the desk. Man I have a lot more room in here now!
