If one of you guys still has the original game of Unreal on your computer, would you mind going into the game and writing down the map names of the original maps that came with the game, and reporting back?

At the moment I'm trying to remember the name of the map that had a large open two floor central room, with a lava pit in the basement, and two narrow bridges across the lava. The green armor was in this area, and the health keg nearby.

All of these maps were ported over to UT, and I think most of them would make great maps to play in. (DM-Ariza, anyone?)
Tonight I've been looking at two versions of good old Radikus.
You nutcases that like small intense maps like Fractal, should give DM-Deathfan a look. ;)

When I get home, I'll give you the list. I have them on my gamer PC.

I decided to put the game on the new rig and have a look at it again. The name of the map I want is DM-Elsinore. (I never really looked at co-op games before, I see they have their own maps! :) )

I've put the final patch onto the game, v.226, but an old problem I had before seems to have surfaced. The graphics aren't bad at all in 800x600 resolution, but I'm convinced I'm stuck in software rendering mode. I go into advanced properties, but I have no idea how to change to D3D or OpenGL mode from software rendering. I can't recall what I did to get it into 3dfx mode on the old rig. At least with this 8x faster rig, software rendering mode doesn't cause the slowdowns it used to on the PII 300, but I'd really like to know how you make the changes in the advanced preferences screen. :| Help!?

Sorry i forgot to get that for you. I installed they game to but I have the same problem I think. To me, they graphics look like crap and I too think I'm in software mode. Maybe I'll load it again and see. I didn't even think to install a patch. Maybe there is an old forum somewhere about this too.

I've asked at the old Infograms forum about it. Atari seems to have bought it out; it is now the "Atari forums". :|

There's a link to the patch in there someplace, btw. Atari Unreal 1 Forum

I'm enjoying the single player game more than I did a few years ago. Back then I was a dedicated keyboard-only player, and the skaarj were tough to beat. Now I just zero in on them with the mouse, and blast them with the taridium shard belching machine gun. I love the alt fire mode of that thing.

We're talking about Unreal right? The copy I have has a Titan on the front of it. It starts with flying around a castle where you see a Nali walking on the roof. Even on easy I can't win and the mode where you play and it starts you off in a mental ward or something...... I get to a part where there is a house down by a lake or something and that's it. I'm sure there's more but I can't seem to find the way to make it anywhere else and the bots even on easy are hard to kill.

That's the game alright. And you're not in a mental ward. You're on a prison ship, and you're a prisoner on your way to confinement on a prison moon somewhere. The prison ship crashes on an unknown planet, and you must escape the planet somehow.

To get past the rocket firing ogres I just rush them and then back away, and rush, and back away, firing the whole time. They won't shoot the rockets up close, and if you're quick they miss when they try to clobber you. Similar tactics work on the skaarj, but they dodge, and will slash you if you get too close. I use F5 for quicksaves and F6 for reloads, and save often.
Never shoot a Nali, they will sometimes lead you to a secret stash; but often you have to protect them from skaarj warriors. ;)

Did you see my thread at the Unreal 1 forum? The answer to the software mode question is in it. You just change a line in the Unreal.ini file. The game looks a lot nicer in D3D. The original OpenGL drivers suck, apparently, so I went with D3D. :)

I have actually misplaced the disk. I can't find it anywhere. I will hunt for it more tomorrow. I'm too tired now and I haven't been to that site yet so no I didn't see your post. Thanks for doing the homework though. I'll let you know what I come up with.

I found my copy of Unreal today. I installed it and patched it up to V226. I went to the forum you pointed out Nameless and changed the line to turn off that damn software rendering. This game has never looked so good on this PC. It's makes it actually enjoyable though I still hate the bots and think that they are too hard. I set the difficulty to Unreal and it is much more fun than set on easy. Lots more monsters on hard settings I guess. I may actually continue playing it to see if I can finish it. Amazing how close it is to UT and yet so different. I'd guess the bots on easy are the same as UT's Skilled or Masterful. Now that I have the CD again, I can copy the maps and put them on my webpage for you if you still need them. Why did you want these in the first place?

 Well thanks, but I just wanted the deathmatch map names. -I have them all now because I got off my butt and installed the game.

I don't know why I'm still so cautious about using up space on my hard drive, I've got 80 gig to play with, and it's nowhere near full. (Just checked, 60 gig left free! ) Old habits, I guess. :|

As I said before, I think some of the old botmatch maps will work well in redeemer arena, yet all we ever see is Ariza for the most part.

Herm, you're right about the bots. Even on skill zero they're tough, and if you set them up to learn, you pretty well have to start them at zero or they'll absolutely take you apart in no time.
You can see how the game was improved mightily for UT. Two of the most noticeable things are that the weapons work better, and the bot animations are improved.

I'm having fun with the single player game. This time I may make it to the end without cheating. Last time I got annoyed at how the game dragged on and on, so I went into god mode and smashed my way through the last 10 levels or so just to see how the game ended. As it is now, I save and reload a lot. :o
