Well I finally got tired of the immense amount of time it took to boot up the old PII 300 with that totally evil McAfee virus scan 5.x
I gave them one more chance the other week by downloading their latest "engine" for v. 5x
BUT it must be the engine itself that is so slow. :?
(The only good thing with McAfee was that your "subscription" for their product seems to last forever, as long as you're willing to go and get the engine updates from the web and install it manually.)

So I got out my Norton AV cd, and installed the program. After how many? reboots with stupid Win98SE, it seemed the program was installed. Except that I cannot configure it with the configuration wizard. I got around that by configuring via the task bar, and then updating all the components from the start menu, but the program cannot be started to scan for viruses because the auto config program has never been run. :doubt:
And I get an invalid pagefault error every time I try to run the autoconfig program.

So I am presently using Norton's online troubleshooting to try and resolve the problem. It's having me do this and that, and right now I'm scanning for viruses online from their web site. I had to download 3 small programs so far to do all this. Let's hope they don't check their records or they'll find that this cd has been previously registered on my XP computer. If they do check into it, they've caught me red handed trying to install the program on more than one computer. :?

Damn! The online virus scan takes forever! :o

*Edit* Well this is not good. The virus scan was ok of course, but nothing worked. They recommended trying a reg edit, which I was unwilling to do. So I tried to uninstall the program. But the uninstaller hung up. I tried using "Add/Remove Programs" but that just threw me back to Norton's own uninstaller. What a neat hole to be in. Unable to complete the installation due to page fault error, unable to uninstall because the program was never fully installed, or configured, or whatever.
So I tore the crap from my machine, and used a registry cleaner I have that's always been safe to use, and shut the computer down. In a few moments I'll see if I can boot up again. If I can I'll try again. Only this time I'll use the default installation path, instead of trying to install to a partition with more room in it. :?

Norton Rules! I haven't had any trouble with it ever. I've heard of people having issues trying to upgrade it from the online website but that's it. It has always installed and run fine for me but I did have the same thing Nameless is talking about once. i reinstalled i think and boom all better!

After some more serious farting around, and don't ask me what went right when, because I don't know, but I got the damned program to uninstall itself. Then I tried again, going with all default values. I still get the same page fault error. So I cannot run the config wiz to finalize the installation, even though the program is in fact (mostly?) installed. The live update works, and I can scan each partition and my zip drive by right clicking on their icons in "my computer", but I can't get the program to start up on the desktop. I've been to Norton's support site, and searched for solutions to a page fault error. My problem was on the second page, so Norton knows about it. They haven't been able to reproduce the problem yet, but suggested trying to finish config wiz in safe mode. I tried that once, but it didn't work. So I'm going back to the page on my XP computer to read it again, and I've booted the old heap up in safe mode again.

Back in the good old daze McAfee was the better product than Norton. But in these Windoze XP daze, Norton is clearly superior, although I strongly suspect those egg heads at Norton never got their sh!t together with Win 95/98SE. You wouldn't believe the stupid and unecessarily awkward way they wanted me to start Win 98 in safe mode. Don't those dolts know that all you do is start pressing F8 halfway through the computers startup sequence? DUH!!

All in all I say once again, hooray for Windows XP. I had actually started to forget just how many times Win95 and 98 has had me staying up all night trying to resolve problems like this simply for having had the temerity to try and install some new hardware or software. :doubt: :-x

Oh for fugg's sake. I went back to that support page and found I had not followed its advice correctly. So I tried to do just that, and the mouse and keyboard locked up on me in safe mode. :!:
I reboot, and it happens again! Arrrrgggghhhhh........ I'm going for supper.
WTF is it with this O/S that every little problem has to be accompanied by generous helpings of extra BS :?:
This is another thing I had nearly forgotten about. Being plagued by extra gremlins when you're already knee deep in sh!t. :doubt:

Strike five it's out. My computer locks up as soon as I start opening any windows while in safe mode. So I guess I'll just have to live with this situation. :?

Aaaaaahhhh. Here that. It's the sound of another disgruntled PC user typing in www.apple.com to see what they've been missing.

Took ya long enough to say summat like that.

However let's remember that I'm talking about an old O/S here. Originally Win 95 upgraded to Win98SE, which is as far as the old heap can be brought into the present.
There are programs and games I still like to use that can only be run in this O/S, so that's why I've never upgraded the hardware.

And don't forget that I've already promised to buy a G5. Just as soon as I win the lotto.
