hey here is the thing i need help with if anyone can help please post here or email me at camaroz28gp@comcast.net

slayed and i got a dirtbike it is a honda xr200r 4 stroke it ran awesome the day we got it and now it won't run
it has a new plug and the timing is set he is thinking it my need the valves adjuted but not sure how he has always owned a 2 stroke

if you or anyone else can help i would appreciate it deeply

it's driving us crazy we want to go riding

That is amaaaaaazing to think that Slayed could have been using those pain in the butt two strokes all this time and didn't have any trouble just to switch to the lowest maintenance and most reliable dirtbike in the world and broke it. Run-on sentence I know. Fragment sentance I know. Wrong punctuation, I know. Anyways, how old is the new bike? Vapor lock, gas valve turned off, bad gas, not plugged all the way spark plug cap or faulty on/off switch are the only things I can think of that might make that model motorcycle not work. Really! If it's anything besides what I just mentioned, I would be totally shocked. That bike will last twenty years easy with nothing but new plugs and tires and oil changes alone. Good luck and say Hi to Slayed. It's been a long time since I've seen him or yall for that matter.

It doesn't seem likely that the valves could go so far off it would stop running in so short a time. Here's some other checks you can do:


Make sure the battery is fully charged before you start testing electrics. If the battery is old, you might want to test the electrolyte in each cell to see if you have a weak cell after charging. (assuming it's not a sealed unit) If your battery is weak it could mimic a lot of electrical problems. (If the battery is more than 2 years old, I recommend replacing it.)
Are you getting a spark at all? Remove the plug and secure it against the cylinder fins, then turn the engine over. You might want to close the garage door to be able to see the spark better. If there's no spark then you must suspect a faulty coil, or a bad brain box. While you have the plug out, double check the gap.
I'm assuming your bike has an electronic ignition. If it uses points, be sure they're adjusted properly. Then do the timing again if you change any of the adjustments.
If you still suspect the valves, adjust them when the bike is stone cold. A Haynes manual will tell you how, and is the best aftermarket manual to buy. (bet you already knew that ;) )

Give us some more details about the bike, and let us know if it still won't run.

ok guys it's a 90 xr200r dirtbike everything you guys said we have done prior to me asking for help this dam dirtbike is pissing us off this is great riding weather with the rain and all but we can't get the stupid thing to run and the boys are driving us crazy

thanx herm and nameless but we found the problem it is the timing chain slayed and i put it in time sat he went to check everything over yesterday and it was completely out of time again so the bike is on hold till we can get a chain

Did you use Norton Utilities to diagnose that timing chain problem BH. I know nothing about motorcycles, just computers, so I'm trying to educate myself. :? :twisted:

Where is the timing chain on the bike? Will you have to remove the head to get at it? Or is it off to one side in its own housing? In any case I don't need to tell you to be sure and not let the cam move while you're replacing the chain. ;)

(Kind of like opening the case on a computer, and being sure to ground yourself before and while working in there, Max. ;) :twisted: )

well nameless looks like he is gonna have to tear the motor apart from what it looks like no getting to the chain any other way
which stinks cause i really want to go play in the mud lololol
