I don't recall who gave us the link to this great website for UT maps, but I'd like to say thanks! :D

Now that winter is coming on, and cabin fever is just around the corner; I have assigned myself the task of checking out DM maps from this website. There are currently 42 pages of deathmatch maps to look at. I have downloaded 26 maps rated about 70% or higher, from the first 21 pages alone. I'll get the better maps from the next 21 pages later. Some of the maps we've already seen, so I didn't get those. I'll be checking these 26 candidates for redeemer arena over the next week or two, and will pass along my comments about them to you all here. :)

One of the maps I did not bother to download was DM-Dominis. A very fine map that was highly rated by the reviewer at Unreal Playground.
Herm ran this map about a year ago, but it requires installation of a texture or two, so I guess we won't see it any time soon at CG. :( The map is large, but easy to memorize. Essentially it's three medium sized levels stacked on top of each other. However, gameplay is no slower than the other large maps we currently play in.

I strongly recommend this map for use on a server. 8)

I like the idea of this thread as your journal on all maps. You can give recommendations and critiques.

On the other hand, why don't you just play more and leave the maps to Herm, lol!

You go right ahead Nameless. I still have 100mb of space on the server. I have a ton of multifile maps already which none are on the server because they are a pain. Find the good single file ones and send them to me!!! I need to reset the mapvote and get rid of the maps that don't EVER get palyed and replace them with the one's from Nameless. Go Nameless! Go Nameless

Ok, here we go for the first batch but bear in mind that these are quick impressions, and I'm talking about maps for redeemer arena. Some of these would be fine for ordinary UT. Herm, I'll have to double check the good ones to see if they're single file maps.

DM Definitive: A bit on the large side, not very many hiding places, and two spots where you can fall down behind the vat where the invisibility relic is located. If translocators were not available you would be trapped and have to suicide out. Uses the same texture set as DM Fetid. It seemed that the bots were very aggressive for their setting. I liked this map. Recommended.

1 on 1 Ages: Some cool hiding places. A bit on the tight side for guiding, but interesting visually. Aggressive bots. Recommended.

1 on 1 Banktrix: Another map based on the lobby scene in the matrix movie. Two side corridors. Lots of beams down the sides. Terrible map for redeemer arena. But some of you nut cases that like Fractal and Oblivion might get a giggle out of this one, but probably only until the novelty wears off. NOT recommended.

1 on 1 Corner: For total mayhem this one should work a lot better, and should even be fun with 5 or 6 players. Expect total insanity in a full house. Recommended.

Abandoned City: This is not a very interesting urban map. It just won't work for redeemer arena. Lots of better maps out there than this one. NOT recommended.

AF-Central Metro-100 I recognized this one. It was on Herm's or Bo's server briefly. Very large, disjointed, and unworkable. Sucks big time. NOT recommended.

Alcor: All small rooms joined by corridors. Blech. NOT recommended.

Asguard A tight industrial themed map of tall but small rooms with ramps and short corridors. The railings get in the way of shooting. NOT recommended.

AsguardSE The same map redone with a few slight changes, and the stupid railings are gone from the ramps, making it possible to use the redeemer now. But the game would be all Z axis run and gun. Multiple techniques will be difficult as the tightness of the map discourages guiding. NOT recommended.

Avalon A medium sized map, a mix of open areas and corner corridors. Campers in the tower must beware a switch activated trap, that has the button in the middle open area. Looks workable. Recommended.

Borel DS The Rube Goldbergish looking machines in the large central room are visually interesting, but the map is split between upstairs and downstairs action, in a way worse than DM 1. Worth a look maybe, but overall it falls short of recommendation IMHO.

Capella Wasn't this one already on Bo's server? Somewhat interesting, but it doesn't really work. NOT recommended.

I'll post the rest of my impressions of the rest of the batch later.

Hey...

Of those, Ages and Avalon are currently running on NWRO (aka Bo's shitty ol lag ass server). I have added 45 or so maps in the last two weeks, several of them from Unreal Playground, and other various places on the net. Check 'em out...if you can...muhuhuhuhahahahaha...

LOL Bo! Server Nazi Supreme! I don't really get why people say NWRO is laggy. I've been there tons of times and in the beginning yes a little but I think it's good to go. Translocating to kill is harder though.

lets try to work through some of this lagg you may have. Go to www.dslreports.com then go to the tools link and the speed test link. Use all three or four and post the results here please if you get a chance. Please tell me what you have the max client rate set at too. Do you have the allowdownloads set to true or false in the UT.ini? These are just a few of the opening items that may be impacting NWRO. For a laggy server server. I'm amazed at how often I can't get in because it's full???

Right, ok then, I'll just list the rest of the ones I liked and a list of the ones I didn't. Remember these were all rated at 70% or higher.

Winners:

Confinement, Cremator][, Daemons Fall, Drop Zone, Eulogy.

LOSERS:

Casaloma, Filter, Flak74, Ghoul, Giball, Haunted, Hellbells, Hilder 2, Holy God.

I'll check out the rest of the higher rated maps they have over there a later time.

Herm, of all these maps only Confinement and Daemons Fall are single file maps that are also one's Bo is not running. I assume you want to run different maps?

I think it's hard not to run some of the same maps that Bo runs. We both have a large selection. We both use the BonusPacks and the originals too. i used to try to run totally different maps from everyone else but that too became too hard to determine exactly who had what and so on.

For me, the next trick will be to not get new maps confused with old ones so that when I make the next Map pack, I don't have to redo all of them. Another big problem I didn't forsee before I made the change, was me changing map names to better be able to search for them, such as Deck maps. I also recapitalized some maps for better reading such as thisexamplemap.unr to ThisExampleMap.unr . This means that you couldn't possibly ever download the original map from where I got it and play it on my server since the redirects are so cam case sensative. My bad but that what fast redirects are for I guess, so people like me can make these changes and players don't have to suffer too badly for the choices I've made.

If they are single file maps, I'll be happy to put them into the rotation but right now I'm trying to figure out how to reset the map counts in mapvote so I'll know what i need to get rid of. Bo, if you know this please chime in. I'm going to look some more right now.

OK! That should have been easier to figure out than it was but I have now got the mapvote reset and will trak which maps don't get played and will remove them. At worst, CG can cycle a total of 360 maps a day and only has 250 so all maps should be available in a given day and that's based on each one taking 15 minutes to play. I na week or two, I will remove the maps that weren't even touched and replace them slowly with maps that Nameless picks. TADA!

I have just gotten 28 more maps to look at. There were a few highly rated maps already running on Bo's or Herms that I didn't need to get. That's it for all of the rated DM maps from Unreal Playground. I'll let you know what I think soon. ;) :)

Hey Nameless,

I went through this post and that I can tell, you mentioned 9 of the maps favorably. I have downloaded those 9. You mentioned another 28 or so that you were still going through. Done yet? Let me know.

Yes Bo your server really sux. I hate it when my ping climbs up over 100.

I think Bo has almost every single good map from that site. Including the maps with more then one file.

Some of the regs here hang around NWRO just long enough to ask them to come over to CG so I'm guessing that's why they haven't noticed the maps.

Yes Bo has most of the maps I've been looking at. He's installed a couple that I frowned on, but one works fairly well after all, (DM-Ghoul) although the small and cramped one who's name I forget at the moment doesn't. ;)

Herm, I've downloaded and installed the other maps, but I haven't looked at them much yet. I get around to it later. Let's let everyone get tired of the current batch of new ones first, shall we?
