I switched from McAffee or whatever it's called to Norton's about a year ago. I had noticed how the McAffee was scanning the crap out of every little thing I did. My hard drive was constantly crunching. The Boot ups were taking forever. This was most obvious when I switched from McAffee 4.03 to 5.0. The new 5.0 engine totally sucked and I had to update manually all the time for new dat files. I finally installed Norton's on a friends and couldn't believe how easy and seamless it was. On a older PC I would have to recommend that anyone should use Norton over McAffee. When you switch, it's like going from a 233 to a 400 mhz system. I remember when I did and couldn't believe how much faster my system was. Trend Micro seems to be pretty seamless too. What are you using these days? Why? How much is it?

Hermskii

I use Norton System Works 2002, which comes with NAV. Since System Works 2003 is out now, I would assume that you can get 2002 for a discount.
The Jargonaut

You're right on the money Herm. I noticed the same things when I upgraded to the 5.0 engine. Boot up times on the heap went way up, as McAfee seems to take two good hard looks at the drive as it chugs along. I never used auto update, but the little button/feature on the v.5.0 control panel often erroneously told me my DAT files were up to date when in fact there was a new set DAT files available. It can't seem to handle more than two updates at a time either, so if you go away for more than two weeks holiday, you've got to download the latest "SuperDAT.exe" yourself anyway. That's how I always update now, as using the SuperDAT.exe means you don't have to reboot, and wait forever (again).
You're right about the Norton too, it does seem to be much faster.
Btw, the way to get McAfee to stop scanning the crap out of your hard drive for every little thing is to turn the scan in background task off. You only need that in an office network situation anyway. Leave the other auto scans on, and you should be protected well enough. The little shield in the sys tray will turn from multicoloured to blue after you've disabled background scanning.

In the old days Norton was full of bugs, and McAfee wasn't. But that was then. I'm curious about the new Mcafee engine though. Maybe it's an improvement?

I use McAfee as well and for the same reasons as nameless. Norton 'was' buggy as heck for what seemed like a very long time. Up dateing with SuperDats is a pain but I feel comfortable with it. McAfee has saved my but three times that I know of and most likely many more. Dispite all the negitive baggage it carries, I'll stay with it.

Old Dog...New Trick !

Das Hookster

A condom strapped to each finger works well for me. That way I can switch from the keyboard to the mouse without worry. My only problem is that the receptacle ends occasionally get caught in the F Keys. If any of you have a solution to this problem, let me know.

polytorp
