So it seems I may not get to put CG on a better box for a while longer. It hit me last night that maybe game play will improve a little if I get rid of the relics. I don't think it would be a big deal and I doubt anyone would have noticed me taking them off without asking but I've been VERY WRONG about these little decisions before so I thought I'd bring this to the council. Would anyone really care if I were to remove the Relics from CG? I've noticed in the logs that on certain maps, the bot paths get all screwed up and the bots AI isn't really good enough to deal with Relics anyway. I suspect with getting rid of the Relics that people may get a lower ping, a higher FPS (better picture), and my log should decrease in size big-time. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Hermskii

Hey Herm --

I find the relics to be a distraction; lotta times I think they're people when I'm shooting around tight corners. (This may explain my scores. If you do keep them, please count them as hits and I will rule.)

The only ones that make much of a difference are speed and, to a lesser extent, vengeance. I for one could live without those if it meant better performance.

Yours in democracy,

cf

Other people emailed me the response to this question. Seems no-one has a dire need for them so next time I catch CG empty, I will remove the relics. I am also going to add the word ass back to the bad word file since naturally someone had to expose to the fullest that it was available. Give thanks to the Ass-Assassin for that!

Hermskii

Herm...

What the devil is wrong with the word "ass"? Didn't Mary ride one to the manger where the little fella was born? I think Ass-Assassin's name refers to a sniper that targets donkeys...I could be wrong, though...

I agree with the crowd. The relics really have no use in the redeemer arena, as they really can't affect the outcome as much as they could in normal DM, CTF, etc...
<SRA> The Jargonaut

Yeah, I agree. Lose them. Sometimes the relic of defense will save you, or the relic of vengence will take out a bot or two after you die, but mostly they do nothing for the game.

Of course the bots love them, so you can "guard" one that's close to your hide out, but that just skews the gameplay anyway.

I didn't like them at first, but Torp convinced me how fun they were. Then I began using them. They can and do in fact affect the outcomes of the games. I can live without them if it helps performance, but they do add a dimension to the game.

$.02

<SRA>/v/ahatma

Interesting.. the relics were always part of SRA. It was a joy to see Torp use the speed relic to fly around the map.. Most of the people here that are trashing relics have only been playing redeemer arena less than a year. If it is the intent to totally redesign RA.. then I think we should be calling it all HRA or NewBs RA...

The relics are great.. they do not in my opinion cause much pain on the servers..

I say keep em! But that's only one Schwantz's opinion..

Grandfather Schwantz

P.S. Herm: I have to agree on the ass word.. do you think the 7 -12 year olds aren't using that biblical word at school.. Another thing, your cuss monitor likes the word cock but issues a warning on the word "dick". I found that I couldn't trash talk Mah unless i used the c word.. Oh well.. this is progress?

Edited by: schwantz at: 5/10/03 10:04:43 pm

I hope they stay. At least some of them.

Relic of Speed: Maybe you cant outrun a redeemer, but you can take cover or hide a lot faster.

Relic of Vengeance: Can add to your score if you are close enough to someone.

Relic of Redemption: Works two ways. If you have it, it keeps others from recording a frag when they get you. Also quite handy when you are suprised by an opponent, i.e. running around a corner and there he is. One of 2 things can happen. You either can shoot your opponent, get the frag and it won't count against you. The other scenario is (s)he shoots you, it counts as a suicide for them and they go back one frag. you on the other hand respawn somewhere else.

Just something to consider. I suppose arguments could be made about the other relics.

OK, the word As* and Coc* have been blocked and the relics are gone. I have always liked the relics and thought they brought a whole other dimension to the game especially the Speed relic and the relic of Redemption. That Redemption relic has saved my but a million times but none of them ever really changed the outcome of the game in this Redeemer Arena. As always, this decision is reversable. Let's see what we think over the next week or so and revisit this decision then. I know that in practice sessions the relics add a 20fps hit when they are in the game. I suspect the results of relics in play have even a greater effect on line since it means even more information has to be repeatedly sent. Like I said, this is certainly reversable but over-all I think this is the right choice right now.
Hermskii
