Hey folks..had almost a full house in Nuclear Winter tonite...ran smoothly except when folks were downloading custom maps. Am running the Abyss web server on the game box to avoid the slow in-game d/l's, but the pings still shot up to unmanageable levels while newcomers were getting maps. Cable...ah, blessed cable...I have a d/l speed of over 1300, but the uploads are around 170 - 200 kbps. Sux...guess I will have to set up remote d/l's to make this work well for everyone...so, until I get that set up, I am giving you folks a choice: stock maps and skins only to avoid this...or can you live with 400+ pings for the beginning of maps while newbs are downloading? I can almost predict what the response will be, but will abide by the majority reg opinion in this matter...if this applies to you, and/or if you give a crap, let me know...

Bo

If you want to use stock maps and skins until the redirects are complete, then that is okay,
I can say that when no one was downloading, my ping was AWESOME! Usually, if I am around 250, I consider that excellent. Last night, I was pinging in the 190s!! It really makes a difference. Great job on the server!
<SRA> The Jargonaut

Stock maps are ok with me too. Heck, I could revert to 56k and still play a good game on your rig. I've had pings lower than Herm would get on his own rig sometimes.

I had the exact same problem with mine Bo. Everything would run great until somebody would have to download something which made everybody on the server's ping jump up by at least 200-400. If you got an extra box besides the server itself that might help it out alittle bit to put the webserver there but I would not know since I have not tried it before.

BTW the server is running great......100 ping to it and running smooth as silk. Might want to kill that DE crap altogether tho unless you need it for something you are running.

Good Luck,

|<idcapri

Well, Bo, We crashed your server. You had a full house, and everything was going fine. Then at the end of Liandri.. CRASH. Oh well. I have one question about the server.... Where is The JargoBot????
<SRA> The Jargonaut

Edited by: Jargonaut at: 5/5/03 11:05:06 am

Hey kidz...glad for the most part that the server is running well for you folk. Haven't got around to any modifications this week, have been sick as a dog. I will decide sometime this weekend whether to pull all the custom stuff, or upload the few extras that I am running to my ISP webspace. There isn't that much, really...just a few non-stock maps and skins. As to the crash, I wonder if everyone was trying to d/l one of the Bo-modified maps (my versions of Deck Impossible or Cubicle) at the same time? Don't really know alot about this server dealie...cya out there...

Bo
