For those of us geeks that like to compare systems to ensure we are getting what we are supposed to out of our computers, there are several benchmark tools and programs around. One, that I want to mention in particular is the most standard one used in UT. It is called the CityIntro (framerate count) benchmark
CityIntro is the little game story that plays every time you start UT unless you have already disabled it. This is a great benchmark because it will keep on playing over and over and is always exactly the same thing each time.
Here's how you do it if you choose to compare:
Start the UT game. Once the little intro starts to play press your tilde key(~) to get to the system console. The system console has a command line at the bottom of it just like a place to chat. Type "timedemo 1" without the quotes. Immediately, you see a frame counter on the right side of your screen. Close the system console and let the timedemo run through about three times. Now press the tilde key again to bring back the system console and you should see about three lines stating the average framerate for each time demo you ran. Just close the system console to restore everything back to normal.
I am currently getting right at 112/FPS with resolution set to 1024X768 in 32-bit mode. In this game, anything over 30/FPS is good. Anything over 60/FPS is great. Anything higher than that is basically invisible to the human eye. C'mon nerds! What did you get. Last time I did something like this I had a VooDoo5 5500 and was scoring in the 70's if I recall correctly. Later!

Hermskii

Both of you mentioned numbers at or near 70 and 75. These are both common refresh rates. If the UseVSync setting is set to false then you will never have higher FPS rates in UT. Do the following to make sure your are getting a true result:

Start the game.
Hit the tilde(~) key.
Type the word "preferences" in the command line.
Some systems crash right here and other take about 10 seconds to open the preferences screen.
Click the next to Rendering.
Click the next to D3D.
Scroll to near bottom and change UseVSync=False to UseVSync=True.
I would also set Coronas to False and Volumetric lighting to False too.
Close Preferences window.
Close System Console window.
Close UT game.
Relaunch game and run CityIntro Benchmark again.
Post new and improved results here!

You're Welcome!
Hermskii

PS: I have a XP2100 chip and a GForce4 ti4200 128MB DDR. Pimp, you should be right near my scores if not higher since your card is actually faster with small textures which UT uses.

What kind of ATI Radeon? What kind of Gforce did you have?

Hermskii

PS: I agree pimp that MadOnion is a better benchmark but most people here only play UT and this is already built in and available where MadOnion has to be installed and it test several other aspects of game cards that we don't use or need.

Wow!! about 117 fps during intro, but when i tryed to play a game ,it was running up to around 182 for an avg.!!! and it looked all herky - jerky as far as the way you move it looks like your character was riding a bike on a cobblestone road , as far as I can describe it!!
Is this the way your's does, or is there a problem with the Geoforce 3 card in being able to do this properly??
Thanks for your help Herm!!
ps...so you'll know ,not O/clocking it at all!!

Thanks ,Trisomemorevegimite

With everything turned on, I got a 91 fps. Figured I test at the same settings I play. That is plenty enough for me. With everything turned off, I only got 113. I'm a little disappointed.

*EDIT*
Forgot to mention that I run at 1280X1024, so now that I look at it, I am not too disappointed.
<SRA> The Jargonaut

Edited by: Jargonaut at: 4/13/03 7:46:37 am

The FPS running at full speed shouldn't be jerky. It's not like it running harder. It's running just as hard but now the speedometer can show how fast it's really going. If anything, the visual performance should have improved. This isn't a problem with GForce or any card for that matter. If you were running smooth with FPS stuck at 70 because of the VSync setting, you should run exactly as smooth with the VSync setting reversed but with higher frame rates.
The idea behind using VSync is to ensure the game and the monitor are refreshing at the same time thus you get a smooth picture. If the card can go faster than that is even better so you turn off the VSync and let the vid card run the show. The only anomolies you would see due a problem doing this is called artifacting. It is described as seeing strips of bad video when you move too fast and the monitor can't keep up with the vid card in reproducing the picture so it doesn't finish before it starts redrawing the next next one. Jerky? No. Let us know what happens.

Hermskii
