Post subject: SSRA - Schwantz's Strangelove Redeemer Arena Linux Server

In my never ending quest to learn something new, I've got UT Server working on a Linux box and have loaded the Strangelove Version 2 mutator on it. The server seems stable and hopefully most of the redirection is working. If not, please report it to me at schwantz@telus.net

The SLV2 mutator can be downloaded from here

I will be migrating the UT2K3 server to linux when I feel more confident in running the server under the Linux OS.

The IP is 154.5.231.88:7777

Cecil B. Hey Herm:

By clearing the cache folder, does that give you the ability to confirm which files are redirected and which ones aren't??

Sgt. Post subject: Rumiko Asia Problem

Schwantz,

I cleared the cache (I'll explain why in a sec), and connected to your server. I had gotten about 4 skins files very fast and then the error came up saying that the server refused to send Rumiko Asia. So, that's the only hitch I saw but no one will be able to connect until it is resolved.

Now about the cache. I'm unsure about everyone else, but for me, files that I get from other servers go to two places in my UnrealTournament folder. The first place is the Cache folder. For me, the second place is in the UnrealTournament folder right along with all of the other folders as .tmp files. I delete the Cache folder all together because it will be recreated automatically next time you have to download a file from someone's server. I'm unclear what the .tmp files do exactly but they are always generically named like this: cache00001.tmp and cache00002.tmp etc. etc. So I nuke all of those from the UnrealTournament folder too. When I'm all done, my UnrealTournament folder just has 9 folder and no files in it. At this point, it's like a brand new install that is virgin to playing on actual servers.
here's my quick explanation of how pc's connecting to servers works:

You try to connect to me and I have a special map running right then.
Your PC ask mine if it can play.
Mine says yes if you have the special map you can play.
Yours says I don't have it.
Mine says well you can't play unless you have it. I'll send it to you.
Yours says cool! Send it then.
Mine sends it.
Yours says I have it now. Now can I play?
Mine says sure!
you get a screen that says "Connecting to 66.25.24.124:7757"
You are now in the game.

The file my PC sent yours is now in your cache folder. Next time your PC ask mine to play, mine checks your cache folder to see if you have everything you need to play on my server. If so, you play, if not, it forces you to download what you are missing. I think the .tmp files are reference files to files in the cache folder. So, if you delete the cache folder and the .tmp files from your UnrealTournament folder and try to connect to my PC again, my PC thinks you've never played on it and sends you all the files again! I install UT once for each server and once to play with. I just install them to different places on the hard drive and name them differently after they are installed to keep track of which is which. I name one install "Play UT" That's the one I delete the cache folder from and then I connect to my server to play. My server thinks it's the first time I've been there so it forces me to download the map etc and so on. While it's downloading, if I made a mistake on the compressing of files or forgot to copy one up to the server or misspelled one, that's is the one that will download super SLOW. I stop everything, go fix it, delete the cache files again and retry until it downloads everything super fast and connects. When it does that for me with a empty cache folder, it should do the same thing for anyone who ever connects to CG for the first or any time. You can see I have to do a lot of testing with all of my maps. Nameless has been kind enough to join me through a couple of these test nights and can back me up when I say it takes forever.

I hope that answers the question and some. Fix Rumiko Asia. I'm anxious to see a map I saw on your server. Let me know if I can help in any other way.

Hermskii

Post subject: Re: SSRA - Schwantz's Strangelove Redeemer Arena Linux Serv

ahh.. the mystery of the cache files..

cache files are files that are downloaded during game time. in general, they go directly to the \cache folder with file extension .uxx . if you look closely, there's a file called cache.ini in the \cache folder. if you open that file in Notepad, you'll see that each .uxx file in your \cache folder is associated with the real name of the file. my theory is that when you connect to a server, it checks to see if you have all the files you need to play. let's say the server is running the map DM-QuadraT, and you don't have that map, it will send the file to you, uncompressed, directly to your \cache folder as a .uxx file. it will also add an entry to the cache.ini file so it will know the .uxx file you just downloaded is really the file DM-QuadraT.unr . when you connect to a server running that map, it will look in your cache.ini file and find out which .uxx file is the file DM-QuadraT.unr .

as for the cache000.tmp files in the root of your \UnrealTournament folder, I think they only get created when you're downloading from a server that has the superfast download setup. when downloading though the superfast download, the file comes down to your hard drive compressed and becomes one of the cache000.tmp files in your \UnrealTournament folder. once the download is complete, it is uncompressed to your \cache folder and becomes one of the .uxx files (and an entry is added to the cache.ini file like before).

- clemmentine

____________________________________________________________
... Can we have the maps from before? Dunno if it's related or not. Just a sudden return to the desktop. When I got back you were gone. But it's only happened once so far.

I like this version of SLV2. I don't recall the junk from your exploded rockets crashing to the ground in the previous version. It's a pretty cool effect, really.

Thanks for testing things out. I plan to add the other large maps sometime this weekend. So far I haven't been able to crash the system. Post subject: SSRA Now Stable

Thanks to Herm, we now have a stable SSRA server running. All applicable files will redirect if a download is needed providing you have installed on your client the UT4.36 patch, Bonus Pack 1, 3 and 4.

I will be adding several big open CTF maps later this weekend and I will test each one for redirection before adding more.

Let me know if you're enjoying the server. Also, to let everyone know, the old SRA1 machine is now converted over to Linux and I will be working on porting over the UT2K3 server to the Linux platform soon.

Linus Torvald Schwantz

Post subject: This is going to be sweet!

BossMan has mastered the Linux system. Soon we will be united again at the halls (or in the hills if you prefer) of SRA! Schwantz has utilized the most stable of platforms for our gaming enjoyment. I'm far to lazy to go this route so I'm glad to see that he did. I think DeadSun has been using Linux on Missile Madness too! I have other news too that to ensure it gets seen by those not interested in this thread, I am going to start another called "UT2003 Regretion Mod". Check it out too. Way to go Boss! I'm glad to see things are going in your favor.

Hermskii
