Hi Folks!

I guess I knew that this day would come. I've been once again monitoring quite closely the usage of SRA and it has been sporadic as best. I've also been checking out Herm's CG and it is in use most of the time and many of the old SRA regulars are now CG regulars.

I was/am always pleased to supply the bandwidth and hardware if the system is being used but for the past 6 months, usage has been low.

Effective tomorrow, March 17th, SRA will be no more. I will replace it with some other type of game server. Probably BF1942 or some other game.

I intend to keep the UT2K3 server running and will continue to give Clem's mod a workout there.

The forums will stay intact.

I want to thank you all for the support and help with this endeavour. I hope to play on CG and frag all of your asses on a regular basis. Later guys and gals!

Terminator Schwantz

P.S. I'm still coming for your dish Mah!

Edited by: schwantz at: 3/16/03 5:28:00 pm

Dear Schwantz,

Are you still going to serve up UT2K3? I think that you definitely should, and that there is quite a big interest in it.

Well, first, let me say THANK YOU for serving up the best mod and creating the finest virtual community centered around a video game. I can't tell you how great it's been, and how often I check the forums. (Are you retiring the forums too? I hope not!!) You've been the best, most democratic admin on the net!

It's true that attendance on SRA has been sporadic, mostly because all the newbies know about CG and old habits are hard to break. But we do still hop on SRA every few days. I think one of the other major reasons we haven't been filling up SRA, besides the fresh meat issue, is that we don't see you on there anymore! It was the best to frag with Steel-Guard Commander from the rafters of Deck16!

Still, from a practical standpoint, I see your dilemma. But this only means that, as the founding father of American Redeemer Arenas, you pass on the torch to Herm, who has already done a fantastic job guarding the radioactive flame, and **now begin to develop UT2K3 Redeeming,** since Clem is already the official Redeemer coder!!!

I refuse to break out the bagpipes just yet,

Your pal,
Mahatma

Edited by: Mahatma at: 3/16/03 5:12:58 pm

Boss I completely understand why you need to shut her down. It's been a real fun ride but all good things come to an end. I want to thank you for the fantastic job you have done over the years. I have made some good friends on SRA. It was always nice to have some place to go and vent for a while and that place was SRA. Although I don't play as much anymore it was always nice to know SRA was there for me. SRA will be missed dearly. Perhaps before you shut her down completely we can set up one last frag fest for all the regs. Like on a Saturday night. Just to send SRA out with a bang instead of a whimper. It's your call though.

All Hail The King of Redeemer Arena Servers!!!!

Naughtius Maximus

Ditto That Schwantz!! I think that at least to keep up SRA 2003 would be good!! But it's nice to have another place to go play Ut1 when the other servers are Down , too full, gone to cranes ..LOL !! or whatever !! If there's enough folks that say yea... Could it still be saved??? It seems just too sad to
ponder...no SRA!! But whatever happens,I hope there'll be SRA 2003 at the very least !!
Thanks again, Trigon

Boss, I totally understand the reason for you shutting down the hallowed halls of SRA. I would probably do the same thing. I just want to thank you for the MANY hours of entertainment and fun you have provided me over this last year. Thanks to you, I finally found a place where I loved to play.

Nautimus' idea about the frag fest is a great one. We should see SRA off with a HUGE bang. If you decide to do this, you can count me in.

Thank you Boss, for the great times. You will be missed....
The Jargonaut

I would probably do the same thing....but I will say this...I now belong to a clan that I earned....not by being a good player(good player HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHH)....not by having some benign affilation.....but from having great friends....from now on I will be known as ;

<SRA>//\ETAL//\AN

at least then I can say I was part of a great thing!
OMG, Schwantz, you know you have touched hearts when the misanthropic, anti-clans Metalman decides to wear <SRA> on his shirt!!!

A great idea actually, one that Jarg mentioned to me today as well.

I'll have my t-shirt on.

Long live SRA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mahatma

Schwantz,

I can see too that SRA has been short of players of late. You and I have had many discussions concerning this. I know you have all of the right answers and tools you need to keep SRA up and busy. Let me give you some great arguments to do just that:

1. You have a great map selection. I've taken great care to never use maps you have. This is extremely important when you consider that I couldn't use your maps anyway being that I don't have web space available required to use them. You own many of the maps that many of us grew up on SRA with. They would be gone if you shut SRA down.

2. Ping Factor: Many players prefer your server because they can't get a good ping on mine and thus they lagg to death. I used to not get a good connection to SRA but was playing there with SEVERAL other players just yesterday and had a great game. Something has changed in the connection to SRA. Squirley, MetalMan, BlondHottie, N6NU back me up on this point please.

3. Mah made an excellent point. You have always been the fairest and most giving of the Redeemer Arena Mod Server Admins. I get request for skins and voice packs all the time. Again, I don't have the space on the web server for them and secondly and most importantly, I'm now too lazy to try to maintain all of that stuff. It's hard. Language is a great example of my tyrant like control on my server. I've gone rounds with everyone over something on my server at some point or another. Even my name moniker here refers to my "control" problem. You and I have even gone rounds about what should and shouldn't be posted here before you reminded me it was your forum and that your policy was that they can do what they want basically. I don't always agree but do always respect your decisions.

4. Stability/Functionality: SRA is easily more stable than any of the CG's have ever been. I'm nervous quite frankly about how long this little Pentium 200 is going to work as a server for CG. You have more and better equipment than I do to maintain a world-class server. CG has crashed twice for several hours at a time just in the last 2 days alone. SRA doesn't randomly boot and rename players ever. I haven't seen the "Red Flag of Lagg" on SRA in over 6 months!

5. Peace of mind: Many of the other posters mentioned the relief they feel knowing that when one server goes down, they can go to another. That works many different ways here with all of the servers! When CG is down I go over to SRA. Remember when we were all down at the same time last time? Everyone freaked out! We can't do that to them.

So all of that was in 5 points but each point had at least 3-5 different reasons in them that were all good reasons and that was just off the top of my head. You haven't even sent your "SRA Shut Down" proposal to the United Nations yet. Please don't jump to fast on this decision. SRA has the longest/best history. I still easily prefer UT to UT2K3. I'll help where I can with the new server but I'd much rather help with the original one and it's continued existence. I have ideas! I have lots of ideas! Reconsider for now and lets talk about them. I think more people should weigh in on this as well before you make the call.

Hermskii

i guess i am one of the new players (less than 3 months), but i can feel what everyone is saying. SRA was the first redeemer site i found and soon after i discovered it it was alone on my favorites list. your site will be missed by all.
one thing i know is that Herm will carry the torch high and all of these good people that play at SRA and Herms sites will never forget where it all started.

fishgod

Boss it was sure fun while lasted. I have had many hours entertainmet at SRA and felt I was a part of a special group. I understand why your shuting down, lately I played alone at SRA and the servers with players drew me away. None of
the others play as smoothly for me as SRA and I sure hate to see it go.
it has been a great ride, and I'll support whatever you decide to do with your server.. to quote New Order (from their song True Faith):

I used to think that the day would never come
I'd see delight in the shade of the morning sun
My morning sun is the drug that brings me near
To the childhood I lost, replaced by fear
I used to think that the day would never come
That my life would depend on the morning sun...

- clemmentine

____________________________________________________________
... I too will miss SRA. Just last night I played a couple of rounds of 1 on 1 with someone who wandered by. Having only two bots to contend with made for an interesting game. You could actually explore the map for more than a few seconds before being shot at, and it made for some cool hide and guide as my opponent and I sought each other out, without being harassed by bots.

My favourite environment is large maps, and with SRA we had some of the most interesting ones. I'm going to miss running around in Deck 17 and the others.

Good luck with the UT2k3 server boss. I'll be along eventually, just as soon as the price of the new game drops a bit. See you in a few weeks or (hopefully not) months.
