As many of you are too aware, I've had much trouble with CG lately. Randomly, people are losing connection and coming back in as Player number 1 or 2 or 3 etc. and it's driving people mad. I had forbid the wife to touch my server for months because every time she did it crashed. I've decided to let the wife use the good PC and I'm going to move CG off of it and into it's own home. Let me give you a virtual tour of the new CG server. It's a Compaq DeskPro 2000. It was made in 1996 or so. It's powered by a 200watt power supply I think. It thinks with a powerful Pentium Pro 200 and is sporting about 96 mb of PC100 cas3 sdram. This chip is so advanced that it doesn't even require a cooling fan, just a heat-sink. Her FSB is an incredible 66mhz I think? She'll be governed with the award winning Windows 98SE and will be located in the DMZ of my firewall. That's the demilitarized zone if you were wondering. She has an super fast 32X cd rom and a floppy drive. She also has a SoundBlaster32 AWE sound-card that is as big as a house. Her hard drive is an astounding 2 gigs in size. Yes! 2 GIGS I said. it's 3:35 in the AM right now and the OS is 80% installed. I hope to have this whole thing running by the time you read this. So let me know when you get a chance and have visited. Thanks!

Hermskii

Always good to forbid the wife access to the server; The line "leave that computer alone honey, its serving UT" I have found serves as a good cover for using the server as mass pr0n storage, provided you have some disk space free (just kidding!). Good thing is, my wife won't touch the server because she is absolutely terrified by Linux (except for the cool little network-enabled clone of the game Battleship).
From what I have seen, your setup seems to be working well so far, especially when you consider your aged hardware (its amazing that it runs on there!). Keep up the good work!
....................../´¯/)
....................,/¯../
.................../..../
............./´¯/'...'/´¯¯`·¸
........../'/.../..../......./¨¯\
........('(...´...´.... ¯~/'...')
.........\.................'...../
..........''...\.......... _.·´
............\..............(
..............\.............\...
DeaD_SuN

Thanks all. I put about 15 more maps on last night. Some, I've never played before. There is one called space dock something that is pretty fun as Me and a few others found out last night. Enjoy!

Hermskii

Thanks again for all the hard work Herm.

I was just thinking about all the problems of late. You got away with having 3 servers for the longest time, with no problems. It wasn't until you set up the fourth server, and/or the UT2k3 server that problems began to surface. -Which may or may not have coincided with those DOS attacks you suffered from some low lifes.

I was wondering if you stuck with just UT; -if theoretically at least- you couldn't have all three cg's going again?

And while I'm musing on a subject I know so little about, how and why is it a pain in the ass to put [PURE] or [CSHP] on your server?

Nameless,

I always appreciate your wording and input. Yes! I agree, How is it that at one point I had 5 servers running from the same machine I played from and didn't have much of a problem and then "POW" everything sucks. I moved CG to it's own dedicated machine and only once since then have I've seen the PlayerNumber1 problem occur. I have CG on it's own machine, using the latest patch and most importantly a different OS and still issues occur. I blocked the only 3 attacks I saw and that made everything great for over a week before I saw "it" happen again. I have utilized every known tool I have to prevent this and it still happened! Granted, once a week is tolerable, but it's still once a week more than ever before not including the last month. I'm totally blown-away at this point. I've reinstalled the game using different patches, different OS's, different firewall ports to no avail. I would have guessed that I rebuilt my PC wrong but now, it's a totally different PC and it still is occurring once a week too much.
I have ideas about going back to a different firmware for the router that never had this problem. I'm thinking about researching further for other attacks. I'm thinking about getting a dedicated T1 line to my residence??? I just can't understand why all of the sudden this is happening. It all started when the PC crashed and I had to rebuild as best as I can remember. I do so much to my system so often that I don't know where I left off and where I began. I'm satisfied with the dedicated server so far. It has done much better than I expected. I have a couple more options to try still but I'm not feeling positive about the potential results. Time will tell.
PURE and CSHP are a pain because they require much attention to the UT.INI and they seem to be cracked inside of days of newest release. I'm actually not even positive as to how to use it server side in the first place. Everything I read says something vastly different. I haven't heard any cheater claims in over a month and everyone I ever researched to this day as far as regs have gone has come up false. Yes! KB, DeathInc. and Mahatma "ARE ALL CHEATING" but I can't tell how they do it other than they use the dark side of the force. All kidding aside, no one is cheating as far as I can tell which makes it better for me to NOT have to deploy any anti-cheat methods. Read about them yourself. I dare you to even determine what the latest anti-cheat version of PURE or CSHP is. Just that is hard to tell these days. Let me know. Don't forget though. Time has surely proven that the SRA/CG players are the best and most honest/fairest players on the net.

Hermskii
