I'm talking to you from my older hard drive right now. It appears while rebuilding the servers I did something wrong in that my usual hard drive just gave me some error about not being able to start due to a missing file which it doesn't name. I tried to use the repair function that XP pro has but it was a no go. I expect that I'll be down for the week. I'd send an email to the regulars but I can't since the address book is on the other drive. I'm going to put it back in and continue trying to recover. If I can't then I'm rebuilding from scratch and that will take forever. Just wanted to let you know why my servers aren't there.

Hermskii

That bites Herm! I did have one question -- you indicate that you tried the Windows fix and it didn't work. Really?!?!? Something with Windows didn't work???????? Say it ain't so!

Good luck we miss ya

cf

Holy shit Herm!!! That's terrible. These newer hard drives will fail if you just wink at them. To boot (no pun), the companies have reduced the warranty to 1 year.

My advice: Always ghost your system to a second data drive. And then, for desperate times, save that image on CDRs in case your backup drive craps out. The advantage is not only easy backup, but also -- you can tinker with your system, adding software and tweaks, and if you don't like it, you can ghost the whole thing back to the basics/the way you saved it.

Major bummer. At least now you don't have to worry about several different arenas! Hey take your time -- we'll be hanging at SRA and Deadsun's.

Mahatma

Post subject: Confirmed last night

After running a program trying to fix the data problems I found 572kb in bad sectors. I checked out the back up drive too. It is still totally good. I will get the bad one replaced for free in a few days and start rebuilding. I could put in the backup. It has all of the servers on it from about 5 months ago but I would rather wait and get the new drive and insatll both of them again. The inside of the PC needed a good dusting anyway. See you in a few days. I'm on the wifes box right now. It sux bad!

Hermskii

Hey Herm,

Out of curiosity, did that drive have a little Bios program on it like EZBios or something like that?

I highly recommend only using FDisk and not installing any of those 3rd party proggies to format and partition your drives.

Happened to a buddy's drive, and of course trying to recover it with Norton and MS completely made the data unrecoverable ...

You could always go by the white ikea Apple store and replace that $200 drive with a $5,000 MAC and a $2000 monitor.

Post subject: HOH is sorta up now

No Mah. I didn't have one of the programs on but I know what you are talking about. Those were great back when BIOS's weren't smart enough to see extra big drives but now, those programs can really only cause trouble. you're right too, good luck getting that program back off of the hard drive after you put it on. I learned the hard way a long time ago and it's only F-Disk for me baby! I rebuilt my extra hard drive. I have it a little better than halfway done. I can't believe how much info I actually lost. I'm still wandering around shocked. So far the new install looks good. I didn't get to test or set up fast downloads or anything on HOH. I just wanted to get it going. I still don't have email set up on this disk. That's all.

Hermskii

Hey fragbait, Did you just say that when XP is running right it never crashes. Isn't that like saying when my car is running right it never breaks down. Maybe it's just me. It gave me a warm feeling anyway. Thanks bro.

Post subject: Re: Did he just say what I thought he said?

I think what he meant to say is that when XP is running right it crashes a TINY BIT less often than me, 98, etc. Of course we Windows users will take whatever we can get.

I have added up the cost for all my lost time for all of the Windows crashes in my life and it still doesn't add up to the cost of a Mac. Oh, and all games work with my computer.

But you just rest easy and keep playing with your Mac.

cf
