Post subject: Maps: Winners and Losers

I've started a list maps, most of which have been on Herm's servers in the past. These are the one's I feel are pretty cool, and would like to see back on again. I've also included a small handful of one's I've always wanted to see online, either in SRA or on a deathmatch server, like cg3. The list isn't quite done yet, it took me over an hour of looking at all the maps I have on the old heap just to get this list started.

However, I'll start with the maps I'd like to see gone from the servers, ie. the losers. It's simple. Namely, all of the small tight little industrial themed maps that all look the same, and play the same. No need to name name's. Just chuck them all!

Now for the list of winners. (IMHO of course! )

WaterFort
Absolution
Aggressive Tendencies
Angel Gate
Apophis
For whom the bell tolls
Cyberwar
Eschertown (now that there are translocators! )
Fightnight
Forgotten (Forgotten Fort?)
Forsaken
Fort
Gravadyne 7 -a very unusual map, good for cg3, at the very least.
Konosus][
DM-Lift (ie. The Lift Down) another map that will work great on cg3.
Organic

DM-Pimpslap If we MUST play in an industrial themed map, this is the one to use. For some reason I kinda like the name, too.

Potamic -A very large map. So what!

Raptor

That's it for now. I'll finish the list later. Comments anyone?

*Edit* Here's a pretty good one I found at Brutality today:

DM-Nali Castle -Remember the castle animation opening screen for the original game of Unreal? Now you can play in an authentic recreation of that map.

Edited by: a nameless entity at: 2/17/03 10:52:26 pm

Post subject: Nice work!

Nameless,
I don't have time to deal with this list yet, but this is exactly what I'm looking for. I do need you to name the small maps you don't like. I would like to seperate small Deathmatch maps and large open maps to the servers they work best on. Fortunately, I already have most of the maps on the server but I'm also out of space. I will be removing the skins from the server soon because they eat too much space up and I can't count on the people with special skins to show up often enough anyway. Cool maps is the best reason to visit servers. Not skins. Schwantz (SRA) is the exception here. Maps are easier to manage too. No server package add ons with maps. So, in short, keep up this good work. I will try to revisit this often and make changes to my servers as needed. Thanks!

Hermskii

Post subject: In your opinion what would you do???

So should I leave these on the CG2 server but take them off of HOH? If I leave them, I have to keep them on the web server so the fast redirecting downloads will still work on CG2. Thanks for you time and trouble.

Hermskii

Post subject: Re: In your opinion what would you do???

Just get rid of the losers entirely would be my advice. I only put the ones I strongly dislike on the list. That should leave more room for the maps that may turn out to only work well on the deathmatch server.

Awright then, heres the rest of my favs. Not too many more:

Rrajigar

Rumble Pit

Sniper Town -worth a try, anyway. As the name suggests it's really for sniper matches. But it may work ok with redeemers, if you like large maps.

Sun Tzu

Thursday -This one works. It's not a Nali City any more. It has been replaced by 3 similarly named maps by other map makers. The one I like must have gotten lost during Nali City's makeover. It was made by Andrew "Amber Eyes" Rohs.

I see that DM-Dominis is gone from the servers. Will it be back?

Am I the only one who has strong dislikes and likes about maps? No one has chimed in with their own list of favourites. Speak up now, or forever hold your piece.

Post subject: yosnap

I don't have several of the ones you named. You know where I can dig them up? Yes, I will be putting dominus back on. I'm now down to about 40 mb on the web server. UT2K3 maps are huge!

Hermskii

Post subject: What does "yosnap" mean?

Well if you can't find them at Nali City or that other site called "Unreal Tournament Map Rating" that's in Germany, then forget it. I think you'll want the room for the new game's maps anyway.

I haven't been able to raise any interest in reaching a consensus as to what should stay and what should go in any event; mores the pity.

Post subject: Conflict of interest here!

Mah wonders why I took the 1 on 1 maps off and Nameless praises the removal. I know that Nameless and I prefer maps that you can explore. Mah and Bo like the ones that are fast loop of poop type maps. I know this from reading the logs. Blondie is just happy to be hear. Many people hate the large maps. I can understand that all the flying is time consuming. They provide a rest for many of us small map challenged people. Nameless has really been the only person making remarks about what maps he likes and dislikes. Now, I know Mah wants the 1 on 1's back. The funny thing here is that MapVote is enabled. If everyone lands on a big map, it's because the majority voted for it. Just like the cussing mod, there isn't a right answer. I prefer to please the masses. Many of you are quality people who have been here forever butttttttttt I tend to go with the masses and the the people who actually tell me what they want. So speak up. Thanks!

Post subject: Re: Conflict of interest here!

No conflict, Herm! As long as there is a good mix, then everyone is happy.

With regard to recent maps, a lot of us have never played them or don't recognize the names yet, and so we vote for, say, the haunted mansion, and discover that it is a full 20 minute map.

Crane is back on the list, so that should make all the newbies happy. Kenosis is far worse than Crane. Why? Not just because it is bigger, but because it is really 2 maps combined into one space: an inside map, with many small rooms and hallways, and an outside. Same with Matrixed. Can one really fire a redeemer in those Matrix offices?

This is just my opinion. I am having a blast on the new CG, and have you noticed that there is an average of 7 to 8 players all day long?

M

PS: It cracks me up that you read the logs for our dialogue Herm!!! lol The sign of a dedicated admin!

Edited by: Mahatma at: 3/14/03 4:15:52 pm
