www.powerleap.com

When I purchased my current rig, P-4 "Williamette" 1.5 gig, I thought, "Now this baby will be fast." Well, it was. BUT I am a supernerd, and I need more power. Due to the 423 socket configuration, I thought that 2 gigahertz was as high as I could go. Then, lo and behold, I read in Maximum PC about this little gem. For $300 (or less), I can upgrade my rig to 2.6 gigs. Am I going to try it.... You bet! But before I buy, I was wondering if any of you have heard of this company? If so, have you tried the product. Maximum PC gave it a KICKASS award, and I trust their judgement. I just hoped for a second opinion. So before you upgrade to a new system, let me test this out. It could be a lot cheaper in the long run.
The Jargonaut

Thanks for the link, Jargonaut.

It sounds like you've decided to go ahead and try this solution. I'll be curious to know how it works out. Perhaps one of these devices would turn my old PII 300 into a very decent 2nd computer!

My cousin plays as Mick on CG3 at lunch and sometimes at night. He used the power-leap solution on a PC a while back if I recall. I remember talking to him about it about a year ago. His brother used one too. Both had great things to say about it. I know because I remember inquiring about them. I say go for it but remember, the greatest driving force behind a chips speed isn't the mhz, but the FSB. A P2 runs at 100 FSB. P4 can run at like 400 I think. The point is that I believe for this situation, it would be like having a car that can run at full speed (400) restricted to going one hundred. There is more math there to consider but I don't have the time right now to explain. A 2.6 at full 400 goes 2.6 measured. A 2.6 going at 1/4 of 400 goes??? See what I mean? Let us know what you decide.

Hermskii

Jarg

Before you plunk down the $159 for that thing, and then another several hundred for another chip, you should consider just purchasing a new rig.

techbarg's often lists Dell deals where you can strip down the computer and get an amazing deal, no shipping, usually no tax.

Remember I got that P4-2.4Ghz for $500 or so, with 512MB 2700 DDR ram, a GF4mx, AND a 15" flat-panel LCD!!! The FSB on it is 533Mhz!

OK, if you purchased a MAC, true you wouldn't feel the need to upgrade every year, but you wouldn't have paid $4,000 for an Ikea computer.

no, I have not tried this and I don't think I ever will. nothing against this nice piece of hardware, but using adaptors like that just isn't my style.

socket 423? yuck.. haven't you learned from the original P5 socket switcharoo deal? back when Intel released the original 60 and 66 MHz Pentium (P5), it used a different socket from the later Pentiums. that basically forced those who upgraded early to spend more just to keep up. one thing I learned from that is to not buy into a brand new Intel platform until things have settled down a bit. and yes, I believe the P4 platform is quite stable now.

regarding the company, powerleap, didn't they make slot-to-socket adaptors for the Pentium III and Celerons? some may even support low power chips from Cyrix (now part of VIA Tech) and Centaur (not heard from them for a while). though the quality of their adaptors may or may not be comparable to their old P3 adaptors, at least they have some experience in making such gadgets.

- clemmentine

____________________________________________________________
... WOW, I never expected this kind of response. Thanks folks. Is the Jarg a rich man? No... This is the reason for the post. I, like everyone else, save for the part, and then buy. The good thing for me is that I am unmarried, with no kids. I just have a little more expendable income to waste. I like the "Buy a stripped rig, and then replace the parts" senario. I have around $8000 in my current rig, and I can easily change out everything in this rig to another. The problem is... I bought this thing when the P-4 first came out. STOOPID thing to do! I am still paying it off, and will be for a while. That is why this seems to be a good alternative to a new rig. Also, The FSB will still be at 400mhz, but, if I get a 2.4 gig P-4, there will have to be an improvement. Like I said, Maximum PC gave it a KICKASS award, so it can't be all that bad. I'll tell you what, I'll purchase this product, and give you all the lowdown when it's installed. It will take a little time to save up the cash... I will let you know when the deal is done.
The Jargonaut

Framerates are great, even at high resolutions. The graphics are great as well.
Off topic, but SEGA's Panzer Dragoon Orta is phenominal! It really shows what the Xbox can do. I also love the gameplay.
The Jargonaut
