Here is the problem:
I was playing on CG1 when all of the sudden, my video froze. Not only that, but the whole computer froze as well. I had to hard boot (the first time I have ever done that under XP). When I restarted, The whole frickin system was out of order. Odd patches on the screen, Windows was not able to boot. I re-booted, but nothing. Booted to safe mode, and Windows reported the error was in the video drivers. I am using Detonator 40.72 WHQL, and have been for a week. I didn't think the drivers were the issue, but I rolled back the drivers to the 29 series. Rebooted, and had the same problem. I then decided to take out the vid card (GeForce 4 4400, not overclocked) and re-seat it. I notices that the dust inside the card's fan was a little bit much, so I blew out as much as possible. I then re-seated the fan, and fired it up viola, it worked. I am back on the 40 series drivers now and so far so good. Could this have been an overheating problem with the GPU, or another problem? Is my card gonna last a little while longer, or will I have to buy a new card soon? Basically, I want to know if there is another possible problem that could be brewing. Another thing, I used Norton Win Doctor to check out Windows. There was a problem with the Active X, but it was repaired.
Any thoughts? I would hate to be without this thing for even a few days. To scrounge up $300 for a new card will take a while.

The Jargonaut

Edited by: Jargonaut at: 11/23/02 10:41:47 pm

That's just it, I do not overclock. No need to. Everything seems to be going okay. I think that the dust was causing the card to overheat.
The Jargonaut

Jarg, I don't know why what happened happened to you. I think you are certainly barking up the right tree with all of the theories. I have had much trouble with the Norton utilities other than virus scan. It messed my UT stuff up bad to the point of reinstall. That one touch tune up utility is awful. It will ruin your program associations eventually to the point that when you launch UT it will ask what program to launch it with. I'd say that there is nothing wrong with the video card but heat maybe. I wouldn't overclock anything myself if the equipment is already good enough to get the job done well. Your card is new. It should last a long time. Good luck.

Hermskii

I don't know about the one-button thing in Norton, but WinDoctor often helps crashes for me by repairing the messed up ActiveX stuff that you were talking about, Jarg.

I wouldn't worry about your vid card zapping out. It'll be fine. Winblows just does this crap sometimes.

Next time, I recommend a Mac.
