You want to know what the scary thing about this is? This vulnerabilty has been exploited for longer then they would like to let on; I started getting hits on my firewall for this in may - june 2002. Normal users are at risk too, since MS Access 2000 and up uses a flavor of MS SQL server; so much for "trusted computing". If it were a bug or another problem w/ open source software, we would have seen a patch within hours or days of developers gaining knowledge of the vulnerabilty, instead of months.
just my $0.02.
UPDATE:I have recieved almost 400 distinct alerts from my linksys firewall since last night 9 pm my time, all because of this!
....................../´¯/)
....................,/¯../
.................../..../
............./´¯/'...'/´¯¯`·¸
........../'/.../..../......./¨¯\
........('(...´...´.... ¯~/'...')
.........\.................'...../
..........''...\.......... _.·´
............\..............(
..............\.............\...
DeaD_SuN
Edited by: DeaD SuN at: 1/26/03 10:06:02 am

I just hate the attitude of the MS Rep. It's like it's OUR fault for not downloading the patch!!! Get it right the first time, Microsoft!
The Jargonaut

Hey it's been a long time since I've used a PC so maybe this sounds dumb. Don't you guys get updates automatically from Microsoft. Whenever there is an update to be had from Apple, my computer asks me if I wanna download and install it. I get updates on a regular basis. Usually it's for a slight tick that I've never encountered. Now if your computers have some kind of automatic update system, then why didn't Microsoft make this available to you without having to go to there website to do it. Sounds like Bill is effin ya again.
And yes that dude did sound arrogant. But then again after all this time I guess they figure your used to being bent over and takin' it like a good sheep.......baaaaahahhhhhhhh!!!!:rollin
Thanks for sharing Jarg. This just reaffirms my believe that I have chosen the best platform.
Naughtius Maximus

Yes, Windoze can be set up so that you get notified whenever there's an important patch available. I just got a notification for two security updates the other night.

Hey Nameless is that set up out of the box or do you have to set it up yourself. Seems like it would make more sense to have it set up like that right outta the box and give you the option of disabling it if you like, but why would we want to make it simple right.
Hey MM I think your right. I notice a lot of posts like "Computer Help" and "Problem" and so on and so forth. Don't remember any "Mac Problems" threads. I could have missed it though. Kinda feel left out not having all the problems that our PC comrades are having. But we all know how Apple computers are just over priced yuppy toys for dumb people.
Naughtius Maximus

...and maybe one day, someone will put out some software for their system. And when this happens, just maybe somewhere, an Apple computer will fail. What am I thinking, nobody would ever put out software for Macs.

Just Kidding folks.
The Jargonaut

AAAAAhh the old "There ain't no software for macs" comback. It's funny that you mention that. There are actually two very interesting pieces of software that work better on the Mac. 1.) Microsoft officce(not that I would have this product) which has been found to run better and not crash oin OSX and 2.) Virtual PC (Not that I would by this product either) which allows you to run windows on your Mac if you are so inclined. Running Windows on a mac through virtual PC in OSX is more stable then running windows on a PC. Yes, my Mac will not crash running windows but it will on your PC.
Naughtius Maximus

hey all,,

u know the whole crash thing.... well i have never seen a pc crash unless there were some type of "human" error. ie:like good ole jester- deleting his vid drivers or my brother who installed his memory incorrectly. all in all the reason a windows based computer ever really crashes is human error or some virus that couldn't have been prevented.... and don't say there u go..."virus" macs have the same vulnerability. there just not as abundant. or popular i should say... therefore hackers and would be saboteurs have a heyday.. also macs are way less tweakable. so for those who are into massive upgrading and tryin to blow there shit up. they have a "pc". something they can toy with, like a car... i will say that macs do have better imaging capabilities, but i do not enjoy the mac os. what ever it may be. i have fun jackin my pc up to see what its limits are to make it go a little faster..see how many degrees i can lower it. thats the fun in it for me and many others i assume. everyone dislikes ole billy, shiat i do too. he has more money than i and 80% of the world. so hats of to him and the jobs guy. there rollin in the "doe". so who gives a shit which os or system is really better. its what we are as humans to choose what we enjoy and spend our loot on what we like the best.

no shiat talkin, just my opinion..<img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/grin.gif ALT=" >D">

YoUrPiMp
PIMPOLOGY

Actually most crashes are due to software comflicts, i.e. Windows and Adobe, windows and quicken, windows and dreamweaver etc. etc. etc.. I betchya windows would crash on a regular basis if you had more then 3 programs running at the same time. Human error does play a part in it to though. But your right pimp, who cares. I haven't see nay PC bashing in a while so figured what the heck.
Naughtius Maximus

You know my biggest problem with PC folk is they have such galvanized opinions about Macs, when in all practicality they never have spent any time with them. Being that I use Macs and PCs to teach with on a daily basis I can say that not only would I 'prefer' a Mac but would use it for everything PC folk say their PCs can do better. Simply ease of use. The other thing is the loss of productivity issue. I have spent countless hours trying to figgure out why the PCs in our labs do what they do [not how...what], that infringes on my ability to teach. And this is no specific incident. All of you have indicated on this forum how much time you spend piddlin around upgrading and installing new drivers when you could be working. F*ck that 'I wanna work on my PC like a car!' crap! Get something done with all that money you spend. If anything working on your PC as much as you say you do makes you look indecisive and foolish for not making the best decision on your machine in the first place. And if PCs were built so well, why are they constantly being updated? Lets not even get in to the hardware compatability issues [capatilism is a plague to beneficial productivity]...god what a nightmare you must live! I wont even get into the whole upgrading a Mac argument, it just shows that pimp really is talkin out his ass.

All in all , pimp you should keep yer pie hole shut until you use a Mac on a regular basis. Until then your opinion is moot. Why do I feel like i'm talkin to a redneck? Pimp I really am not attacking you as much as i am trying to motivate you to see the error of your ways....use a Mac for a year [with an open mind and a diminished capacity for cynicism] and then try and tell me the same thing you blab on such an annoying basis. But...I know you won't...or any PC folk for that matter, for fear of being wrong all this time.

Make your life easier...use a MAC

//\etal//\an
http://www.marshallhoyt.com

see my work...need my work...BUY MY WORK!!!!!
