I just went out and purchased an ATI Radeon 9700 Pro. Best Buy had them for $350 (ouch). First impressions: My 3D mark went up by around 1500 points to 8900 or so. I can not tell a huge difference in UT, but UT relies more on the processor than card. I will try it out on a variety of games and let you all know if it is worth the price (probably not, but I just had to have it, I am such a geek).
The Jargonaut

Hey Jarg after you've played with your new card for a while; please let me know if you figure out a way to get rid of the "scanning line" effects that the Raedeon produces under certain "light sources" in the various maps of UT.

It is especially obvious in that secret area in the map "Deck Impossible" over at SRA. In that blue room with the flickering light, huge black bars go up the monitor screen as if you were looking at a movie clip taken of a TV screen. It is very annoying, and extremely ugly and distracting to look at. Other maps have places that produce the same effect to a certain degree too, but Deck Impossible is the worst of the lot.

I hope you got an after-xmas sale... that hurts. Or did you get insurance to cover your other video card, which got hit by a tree?

Hey Jarg. I've used the NvidiaGeForce2MX, the ATI Rage and I now use the ATI Radeon 9000. I have to say the Nvidia was the sweetest. Obviously the Rage card is old school but even when it wasn't I still felt it sucked eggs. I now have the 9000 in the G4 but I miss my NVididia card. The 9000 is so-so.
I actually dumped a new goodie in my system as well. I just picked up a Maxtor 80gig Hard drive. Got it at BestBuy for $89 after a $40 rebate. That puts me at 160 gig now. I'm actually selling some stuff on ebay to make a little extra scratch to pick up another drive or possibly some more memory. I only have 768 Meg right now and I wanna be over 1 gig like I was with the Quicksilver system I had. I do a lot of movies with my kids though so I may opt for more hard drive space. I can still throw 2 more drives in my system if I feel so inclined.
Anyway, keep us posted on the 9000.

Missing you all dearly

Naughtius Maximus

Nameless: Yep, I noticed it too. Kinda weird. I'll look into it.
NM: I hate to say it, but I think that I like the good old Nvidia card too. Normaly, I sell my old cards to friends, but in this case, I am keeping it. Just in case....
The Jargonaut

Hey Mah were you dressed in drag when you sang that little diddy. As far as popping into the arena goes, I have tried on a couple of occasions when the wife wasn't looking. Man it's a ghost town in there. Where the hell is everyone.

I loaded Jedi Knight II. HOLY CRAP!! I put the resolution at 1600x1200 and turned on everything. The framerates are still awesome, and the game looks incredible. It is truely a thing of beauty. I plan on loading up some more games to see what they look like. I can't wait.
The Jargonaut

Hey Jargonaut, are you using your new 9700 Pro card in D3D with UT, or OpenGL?
I've just been to the Infogrammes forum, and I see that the new OpenGL file and .ini changes you mentioned earlier here at SRA are the recommended way to go. So I think I'll finally get off my butt and change over.
Interestingly, the pinned thread that talks about the OpenGL changes mentions that one can now use the 3D textures available on the game's second cd that were originally intended for the Savage 3D cards. The screen shots posted in the thread show some incredible graphics! Have you tried using these 3D textures from the 2nd cd?

Due to the fact that I have to reboot every time I play in OGL, I have reverted to D3D. I did not install the second CD because it caused the "skating" effect on some servers. BUT, if this is fixed, then I will install immediately. I loves me a good lookin' game!
Thanks nameless!
The Jargonaut
