... I may now have the option of getting a cable connection. I got a flyer in the mail today, and the local cable company is offering it. I called the number, but the office was closed. Maybe I will be joining the 21st century. We shall see.

Sigh.... After talking to a rep from the company, it seems that I was mailed this offer by mistake. The rep almost laughed at me when I told them where I lived
Looks like ole Jarg is gonna remain a high ping bastard for the foreseeable future.

it may be different where you are jarg but is cable the same as your phone people? im not sure how it works.
here in the uk we get cable, broadband on the phone, and we get sattelite (broadband capable) are there no other options for you?

No... other than a sattelite, no other options. And the satelite option is WAY too expensive. 56k ain't sooo bad, I guess.

Here, cable and phone are more often than not, different companies.

I have tried to connect to CG via a satellite before and it was nothing but bad. The ping is never ever less than 1000. Sorry but true.

@ the one.

broadband is almost the same as cable.

little info for ya, down a telephone cable you can get 1mb if it isn't too long, nothing more than 30m I think.
This is cos the line has not protection, eg shielding.
utp(unshielded twisted pair) cat 5(e) or 6 has none as well, but there is another wire for every data wire which is used to cancle out the cross talk and nature noise.

All they do for BB is upgrade the line from the connection box down the road to take better bandwidth, but you connection to that is still limited.

With cable it is a high quality cable all the way to the connection block which then upgrade to a better cable of fibre optic.

Think of it like your bloody system, big vains to capilarys. lots of blood, little blood.

Btw all telephone calls in the uk are now transferred over internet connections.

You are like the fighter who trains with 10 lb weights on his ankles for years. When they come off, you'll be doing leaps and flying kicks.

But until then, please grab your ankles.

ntl r upgrading to 2mb soon, it is the same company as telewest.

Yeah the network over power line has been arround for some time, i think its crazy sticking a plug out of u nic card in the wall. NOT me, :):).

what ntl mean by they can only get that speed is that they are servering a lot of ppl, they will be doing 100's of gbps but it is chopped up.

Its the cables that the network is built on that is the problem, alway up-grading.

little info again.
When fibre optic first was made the max speed that they could get down it was 52mbps, that was good for the time but cat 5(e) beats that but 2x just.
btw you need cat 6 or better for 1gbps network.
