It seems of late that we have been visited more frequently by something that can't be avoided. It's a time we all must face someday whether we face it ourselves or are just witness to it. I lost a parent while I was still at a very young age. Death has visited my family numerous times since as it is supposed to after enough time has passed. I have felt it in the air lately. Lingering, hesitating and just waiting to make another pass. I've noticed feeling for a few weeks now. My mother is my only remaining parent. She is in bad health and in her early 70's. Fortunately, it's not her that I speak of today. In fact, in this pass Death will take a family pet. The pet is my wifes dog. My wife has never witnessed Death before. She still has her entire family all the way up to the grand parents on both sides. This will be the first Death's passing that takes something from her. Please understand that she loves this dog as much as anyone could. Even I'm in tears now just thinking of her pain. I hear her sniffling in the other room. I don't pretend that a dog's life is as important as a human's but to my wife it is. To my wife there is nothing more pure than the love of her dog which is always there, always listening, always forgiving and always loving. The vet called tonight to say it was time to say goodbye. I'll be putting her dog down tomorrow after we say our last goodbyes to her. Her name is Snow. She is a 14 yr. old Spits. She is part of my family and I will miss her and love her forever. I hope the lingering feeling I've had leaves soon. I still have many old family members on both sides not to mention my wife's family that I'd like to keep around a lot longer but I know that this is simply the way of things. Take care to ensure your loved ones know how you feel about them. Hugs are always good for humans and animals alike. Peace all!

Sorry to hear it, Herm.

Since there's been so much loss, I'll post a few of the best mourning poems ever written.

Hermski I have lost more family pets then I care to count. I've actually been there at the moment it happened with quite a few of them. It's just as bad as losing a family member. Go out and get the wife a new pup. it always helps to cusion the blow a little. at least it's worked in my case a few times.

Sorry to hear about your wife's dog, Herm.

Yes, a pet can be pretty tough to loose. Especially if you have had it for a while. I have lost a few dogs and cats over the years. The worst one was my dog Kelly. She was a Labrador Retriever. I had her for 13 years. My mother got here for me when I was 4. It was hard to watch her grow old. There was one time I remember when she was trapped in a creek and could not get out because of her arthritis. This was in the middle of winter, and there was snow on the ground... Very cold. I had to climb down an embankment and carry her back home.. She did not make it long after that. She was the best pet I ever had. I wish that I could find another like her.

We just got back from the vet. Snow is no longer with us. My wife and I greatly appreciate the kind words and well wishes. Snow went out very peacefully and with breathe of cheese and doggy treats we gave her just before we put her down for her final rest. I'm here now so life does go on whether we're ready or not. I'm ready and am very glad to be here. I'm glad Snow is where she is now too! Thanks everyone.

I too sympathise with your loss Herm. Take some time to mourn.

I've lost my share of pets also, and it is like losing a family member. After we lost a cat in 1987 to cancer, I didn't want any more pets. But in October of 1991 we took in a kitten. He was supposed to be my mother's cat, but when she and my dad went to Florida for the winter, he bonded with me.
Now he's all I've got left here at home, and he turned 12 this year. The longest we've ever had a pet live is 14. :(

I find that listening to Enya's music helpful in lifting your spirits when you're feeling down. her music has this magical way of taking my mind to a happy place. her website (www.enya.com) has a good collection of songs. I like the four that are currently up on the main page, especially the third one, Willows On The Water.

I am sorry to hear Herm. We lost our dog Larry earlier this year. We found him as a puppy sitting on his blanket in a ditch. I think he really appreciated us.
