Well it's sure been a bitch 1 year and 8 months. I won't bore you with all of the sordid details, but my mother had been battling cancer and bone marrow disease for the last 20 months. It was a hard fought running battle, with alternating periods of renewed hope and despair. :(

Now coincidentially with the beginning of this 20 month tale of woe, I was making my first tentative forays into UT online. It wasn't all that long until I found a server called Curious Georges Redeemer Arena. Like most freshies, I didn't take the game too seriously at first, but it sure was a heck of a way to blow off steam. As time went on and I found my way to the SRA message board, and the SRA server. I began to realize that this game was worth taking seriously, as well as some serious fun and escape. And I liked the people too. :)

I just thought I'd let you know what's been going on with me, and thank you guys for being such a great community of gamers. It would have been a much harder time if I had not had the arenas and the message board to escape to for a while. 8)

The downside is that my "job" for the last few years has been that of caregiver to my mother. I am now unemployed, and my mothers pension will stop too, so unless I can find a job with an over 50 friendly place such as Home Depot, I will be making some drastic economies. For sure the cable TV will be gone at the end of the month, and probably my deliciously fast cable modem. :( I'll probably disappear for a while, but may be back on 56k eventually. ( I think my ISP offers it, so it should be a "good" 56k. :doubt: )

Anyway, thanks again folks. You guys are the greatest! I couldn't have gotten this far without you. :) 8)
I'll still be online until the end of the month for sure, so you'd better kick my arse while you can!

Nameless,

sorry to hear about your mom. I have a lot of respect for people that do the right thing and take care of their parents. We only have one mom, one dad...

I hope you will be able to find a job, especially after what you have been through. Keep us posted about your progress and do not hesitate to ask for help.

PS: Please try to check in to this forum and keep playing. Look at DeadmanWalking, he whoops my ass with 56K any day.

Condolences, Nameless.

Take some time for yourself and clear your head. Doesn't matter how long you have to prepare for these things -- they always descend on us with a terrible suddenness. I lost a parent to cancer too.

Hope you won't be in too dire of straits. Those Home Depot jobs don't require computer use. I suggest you get a computer entry job, so that you can load UT on it and play!

Don't lose touch,

Mahatma

Namless,
Very sorry to hear about your loss. It must be very hard to lose a parent. I have only been play Redeemer for a couple of months and there are a lot of good people here. Kinda what drew me. Here it is not just a game, it is a gathering of friends. Fell like I know some of these people. Anyway...If you don't mind me asking, what kinda cancer was it. Am curious since cancer runs in my dads side of the family.

Do you live in the USA? I would suggest looking for a gov job cause they seem to be really good about age discrimination policies. I work with a guy who is 68. Check out www.bjy.com/bjydotcom/usajobs/

If you live in AZ give me a shout and I can look around for some contract jobs that won't be posted on that site.

Good luck in your future undertakings. Will say a prayer for you.

Sorry to hear the news. Lost my mother to cancer years ago, when I was young and they didn't really have any of today's treatments. I feel for ya, dude. :(

Our condolences Nameless. Our thoughts are with you at this time.

There are jobs out there for the 50'ish crowd. I'm an example of that. It took me two years to find a new job when the airline went down and I've had to start from the bottom but its a job and it's working out well.

I hope the same luck I had will happen for you Nameless.

I have to agree, our UT Redeemer Group is in fact a form of therapy for all of us older folk. I can remember many a time when I came home feeling like crap and after a couple of DM-DeckImpossible and Deck 14 all seemed to be better.

If you take a hiatus from UT, try to make it back. UT2004 is just around the corner.

Sorry to here the news. I'm going through the same thing with my mother. So far she's holding up, but it doesn't look good for the long run.

Chin up!

Nameless, I am sorry to hear about your loss. I lost my Grandfather to lung cancer when I was 10 years old. He was the father figure in my life, so I took it very hard.

I hope to see you in the arena soon. Good luck with the job hunt. If you are interested in the home improvement industry, I work for Lowe's, which is the second largest home improvement company in the U.S..
Let me know if I can help you.
