Post subject:  Question about DVD blank media

This question is for Chitown Mike or anyone else who has experience in DVDburning.

When researching to buy the cheapest blank media, does the "media code block" that is posted for each brand on DVDRHelp.com show you that a lot of different companies are buying the DVD from the same factory? In other words, if my Sony DVD player can only read TDK DVD+Rs and RWs, does this mean I can buy the cheaper Ricoh DVD+Rs (RICOHJPNR01) and get the same results?

I've used Apple, Fuji & Verbatim without so much as a hiccup Mah. I would try to stay away from the really cheap stuff. Good place to go is a wholesale club.

hehehe. what?

I've been using jdiner's extraction tools and was able to put together a pretty professional looking Ali G DVD with all his 5 episodes. Then I started doing another project, but forgot to change the output directory and overwrote my VOBs and IFOs!!! FOrkin A!

Max, I bought 5 Fujifilm DVD+RWs -- my Sony DVD Player (S330) doesn't recognize them. According to DVDRHelp.com, only Memorex, TDK, and HP DVDs can be played in my console. However, from the media code list page, they appear to be the same DVDs as the fujifilms.

Hey Schwantz, that Liteon looks pretty sweet. I'd buy it, but the wife won't let me. So I have to use the one that's in my new laptop. Do you need a work-flow document to extract, mux-demux, tweak, and burn?

So much for my theory of going with the name brand stuff then. If you've got something that works for ya I would stick with it Mah. With as low as the prices have come with DVD-R's now your really not gonna save loads of cash. That kinda sucks about the Fuji stuff not being recognized. If it just wouldn't take with movies then you might be able to still use them for data backup. At 4.7GB I use them for backing up my system on occasion.

HI Mah!

Sorry I didn't see this thread sooner

I've used many brands so far and have found them all good. I order mine from Publisher's Perfection who has a great price on DVD spindles.

Go to http://PubPerfect.com

they have single and double sided DVD. Look up part numbers...

NSP019 ( single disk $2.95 )
NSP021 ( 100 count spindle $1.99 per disk )
NSP020 ( single disk two sided $6.95 )
NSP022 ( 50 count spindle two sided $2.49 per disk )

Hope this helps :D

Thx Mike

I have noticed that there are only a handful of DVD disc manufacturers -- e.g., Ricoh, Ritek, Mitsubishi, etc. Most companies just buy OEM from these and put their brandname on them.

My Sony S330 console player is supposed to play TDK and Memorex DVD+R/RWs. The Fujifilm is in essence the same DVD media as TDK and Memorex. But no go. I have tried different authoring software too.

Damn this is frustrating.

Just use DVD-R or DVD-RW. The DVD+R is a old standard that never really got off the ground. Unless your going to mix DVD Video and DVD-ROM info on the same disk, you don't need to use DVD+R.

Here is a good site to see compatability with most players as reported by users instead of manufacturers.

Hey Mike,

Yes that is the site from which I am getting the media code info on DVD brands! THx though.

I see you are a DVD-R format loyalist! Actually, the DVDburner that came with my laptop is DVD+R/RW, so I have to stick with + until I can convince the wife to let me buy the LiteOn that Schwantz just bought. Schwantz, want to trade wives?
