Post subject: | For using OpenGL as your renderer |
There is a site that someone here turned me on to that has a custom OpenGL driver for UT. For many, this driver seems to makes the game look much better and run easier on their PCs. I'm one of the believers and I use this driver myself. The guy who made the driver just updated it again about a week ago. In FPS benchmarks with UT, I score around 114 with D3D and 118 with this new OpenGL driver. Not too much of a difference there but the picture has more color to me with the OpenGL driver. Another reason you may want to try this is if you have a older slower system or a laptop which doesn't have the best of video card in it, this driver seems to improve video performance greatly in these situations. The last reason I can think of to use this driver is there is a cheat out there that allows a person to come into a game and boot everyone using D3D. This may be what's happening at KidCapri's server these last few days. With this driver, you would not get booted. As always, you use this info at your own risk and if you follow the directions properly, you should have no problems. Neither I or anyone at this forum is responsible for you breaking your computer trying to do this. Thanks and be sure to let us know what you think. Here is the instruction set: How to use the OpenGL Renderer: (Print this if you can) 1. Go to your C:\UnrealTournament\System folder. 2. Rename the file called OpenGLDrv.dll to OpenGLDrvOriginal.dll 3. Go to this link and download this zip file to your computer: http://cwdohnal.home.mindspring.com/utglr/utglr23.zip 4. Unzip it and copy the OpenGLDrv.dll to the C:\UnrealTournament\System folder. 5. Start the game and from the UT Desktop select options. 6. Select Preferences. 7. On the Video tab, select the Video Driver "Change" button. 8. A “Change Video Driver†option window will open. Select “Yesâ€. 9. The “Unreal Tournament Video Configuration†window will open. 10. Click the radius for “Show all devicesâ€. 11. Highlight “OpenGL Supportâ€. 12. Select “Nextâ€. 13. Select “Next†again. 14. Select “Runâ€. Done! If you don’t think it’s working or if you decide that you prefer D3D as your renderer, then all you need to do is go back to your C:\UnrealTournament\System folder and delete the OpenGLDrv.dll file. Then you need to rename your original back to the original name and then do steps 5-14 selecting D3D instead of OpenGL. Be sure to tell us how it works for you. Peace! |

If you use this renderer and the skin changer that scify has, it turns you almost completely invisible to those using OpenGL. |

Why is it necessary to delete the new OpenGl .dll file if you want to go back to D3D? Can't you just reselect D3D under video options? Not that anyone would want to go back of course. This OpenGL driver rocks. :D Scify sent me a copy of your screenshot Herm. That was weird. But I think the problem is at your end. I could see her just fine, and I am using the latest version of the driver. :? |

I think I know why I couldn't see her. You're right! The problem is at my end. I'm using the OpenGL renderer but in addition to it, I'm using the high resolution textures that came on CD#2 of Unreal Tournament. If you thinki it looks better just with the OpenGL driver, you haven't seen anything yet. There are bigger better textures that really enhance the way the game looks on UT CD#2. There is a way that with the new driver you can also see the the large textures. I sent Mah a shot showing the difference and he agrees that we need to find a way to post the shots. Night and day clarity on many things you take for granted with the default textures. I have WinRar'd the textures from the 2nd CD but it's still 328MB in size compressed at maximum. I don't have enough space on the web server to offer it up to anyone (yet). Nameless, I'll send you a copy of the email I sent to Mah to show you. Later! Your right too in that you wouldn't have to delete the new OpenGL driver. You'd just have to switch back to D3D if you needed to. |

So, using D3D, you get smooth framerates, but using OGL, you get choppy framerates? This is odd because, as far as I know, everyone who uses OGL gets better framerates. DM, can you tell us what your processor in your computer is, as well as videocard. Also is your vid card AGP or PCI? Oh, and RAM amount and type would be helpful as well. |

Here is answer herm Can I post Images? Images can indeed be shown in your posts. However, there is no facility at present for uploading images directly to this board. Therefore you must link to an image stored on a publicly accessible web server, e.g.web addresss You cannot link to pictures stored on your own PC (unless it is a publicly accessible server) nor to images stored behind authentication mechanisms such as Hotmail or Yahoo mailboxes, password-protected sites, etc. To display the image use either the BBCode [img] tag or appropriate HTML (if allowed). |

I'm sorry to hear that it is working better for you DarkMatter. Jarg is right. It is odd that you'd get less favorable results using this renderer but it's poosible I suppose. I'd do the back out procedure I described so you'll at least be back to what you are used to. Scify, I can't tell from what you said if you like it better or not. Good luck everyone who uses/tries it. |

That is a special talent there, DM. I am impressed. Quote: PII 350, running win 98, 384mb pc 100 mem, elsa gladiac nvidia geforce 2 mx 64mb graphics on agp socket.
You should have seen some improvements. As long as you are happy with D3D, that is all that matters. Sorry it didn't work for you, DM |
