Damn,

my computer crapped out two weeks ago and I replaced the MoBo. Now it happened again. First it did not want to boot right away, then BSD, then it did not do anything, same as two weeks ago.

So now I replaced the CPU and voila, everything is fine. Looks like CPU's can go bad over time. BTW, I was using a Athlon XP 2000+. The replacement is a XP 2500+.

Yeah. What got me was the slow death and not total failure. That CPU limped along for another 2 weeks before completely dieing.

Heat is really the only thing that "wears" on a processor. Since the one that stopped working was only a 2000 it couldn't of been very old and that was way too soon for it to be quitting on you. :? You better be sure that you have plenty of thermal grease on that new chip and a heatsink/fan that is up to spec for a 2500 otherwise it might crap out on you too. :oops:

AA, I did not overclock that one and it usually ran at about 50degC. It gave me on/off trouble from the start. I attributed it to the MoBo. Soooo, I think that the CPU was borderline from the beginning. Do they have "Monday" CPU's ?

Yeah, On/Off problems are usually going to be the motherboard unless you got a whacky PS. Sounds like bad power problems and a crappy MoBo to me. The processor volage from the MoBo could have been fluxuating and gradually fried that little puppy. What was the MoBo that you replaced? It wasn't a ECS K7S5A was it? :wink: Everyone, I would stay away from that board.

I replaced the PS about 6 months ago. I now have one with 350watts. The MoBo is a Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum KT400. I replaced the Mobo 2 weeks ago with exactly the same model ( I am using the Raid Controller)

The problems returned after a while. So, the only thing that had not been changed was the CPU. I hope I found the source of my probs.

I find that they usually go bad when they start doing any of the following:

* drinking
* taking drugs
* staying out past curfew
* carrying weapons
* picking fights
* hustling the elderly for their checks
