With all you computer savvy people out there how about some advice on picking up a new monitor? Was using a 17" LCD NEC for the last four years until it decided to die on us. Comes on for 5 secs and then fades to black.
My wife is looking in to 19" monitors. (something about the bigger the better...but she wouldn't be talking about me would she?) Any name brands out there I should look for or steer away form?
Thanks

Stay away from NEC. LOL , Actually, I'd say stay away from ViewSonic and Orion monitors.

Don't waste your money on an LCD monitor. CRT is still the way to go. They're way cheaper, and still vastly superior. A 19" CRT monitor is the ideal size. Its footprint is hardly larger than a 17" CRT, and the screensize is nice and large.

I thought CRTs were a thing of the past but after a little research they still got it going on and the prices are right. The only problem now is convincing the wife. Currently we are having to use a CRT and she hates the size of it. It takes up a lot of space and I think that is the main issue for her. She is giving me one week to come up with some idea's on a new monitor....she has her eye on a 19" Princeton VL1916. Looking at the specs it sounds pretty good. But no clue on the company name.
Should I stay with a brand name or are off brands just as good?

Hey. I'm sorry I forgot to mention Princeton earlier. Don't get it. Those are almost as bad as the Orion monitors. I have replaced nearly 1000 of those heaps. My buddy swears by the Viewsonics though Isaid stay away. I take back what I said about NEC. I got it confused with a KFC. I had a NEC and it was pretty good. I would still stick with Sony or Samsung. Make sure you learn what Dot Pitch is and how to tell what is better and what is worse if you end up getting an LCD monitor. Keep in mind that they make flat screen CRTs too. They take the cake on being the best of the best and I challenge anyone to challenge that. You said the wife wants space though so you will need to go LCD flat screen. Learn DOT PITCH and buy a good one. Higher refresh rates are usually one of many good indicators of a monitor's quality.

Sup Meat,

If you are looking for a nice LCD at a good price you can not beat Dell (no groans please) I LOVE my 20 inch widescreen. Samsung is another to look at. They have a no dead pixel policy, something to pay close attention to.

If you go CRT look for a Sony or NEC. Trinitron tubes are my favorite CRT.

LCD will save money on electricity and heating/cooling (do not generate much heat.

my .02

Thanks for the advice guys.
Again, I'm clueless when it comes to PC/Monitors.....so at least now I have some direction.
I just can't believe how many monitors are out there.
