Post subject: | PING |
I watched today as the pings spiked up to 600-800 for everyone. At the time, CG had 10 players (full) and MHM had 6 players (almost full). I watched as everyone complained about the pings and lagg heplessly. 36,000 is my total upload bandwidth. 4,000 is the amount of bandwidth I dedicate to every player on CG and MHM. 36,000 divided by 4,000 is 9. Nine is the maximum amount of players that I am supposed to be able to support. That total number of nine includes players from both servers. To treat them more evenly, I can reduce the max player load to 5 on CG and 4 on MHM. That equals 9 which would mean that I could guarantee the quality of service for the players from my end. That is not going to happen. I think 10 is good for CG. I may drop MHM down to 6 but that still equals a total of 16 total players that may connect to the servers at any time which is exactly how many were on today when all of the pings went through the roof. I would consider blocking the 56kers as they produce more lagg and ping issues than anything else but I refuse to because many of them are favorites around here and this server is not better than 56kers especially those ones that made this server what it is. There is no easy answer here. Expect when CG by itself gets full especially when 56kers are in the mix that lagg and high pings are going to happen. At 10 players, the server is already maxed out bandwidth wise and there is still a whole other server running too in the same computer as CG and it has players on it too. Both CG and MHM run high packet mods. There is lots of information being sent back and forth between you and the server. That information when multiplied by the player load equals lagg. I am pricing a business class cable connection and 1.5 up and 1.5 down ADSL options now in order to slam the ping and lagg issues once and for all. The cable is more expensive but I keep all of my email accounts and all of that if I go cable. Till then, please be patient and consider that if it gets too bad, people will leave soon enough and the pings will restore to normal. Later and sorry the ping/lagg issue is actually out of my hands currently. |

I see Kid's is empty a great deal of the time. -Perhaps the regulars here should agree to play on Kid's server? This would leave CG available for those others who only know of CG. I guess this would kind of make CG a training ground again. Would that be ok Herm? One other thing to mention is bots. CG no longer has enough. (Sorry MEAT.) And Kid's has too many, IMHO. Can you guys get together and agree on a good number of bots for the servers? This way the play would be the same on both servers when they're not full. |

I was thinking the same thing the other day, Nameless! GMTA Why not ban all of the regs from CG and make them play on Kids or Clan DOU? That was what got me hooked and I think it will work for others as well. Gives a little thrill when you finally make it to the Big Leagues! |

Danger - Danger Will Robinson... Hmmm? The bot thing can't ever be resolved I'm afraid and you can't really force people to play on other servers though I love the idea and the ladder effect of improving. I can't speak for kid but I'll put another bot or two on CG. How about 1 more for starters? It isn't the amount of bots that matter, it is the map that is played vs the amount of players. You need many bots for big maps or if you really want fast games. You need less bots the smaller the map is or if you want a slower game. There is no way to get UT to alter the amount of bots based on a map. So this is doomed as far as getting it right. The question is what is the least needed for a big map if played by yourself and what is the most needed on a small map when played by yourself. Average those two numbers and add or minus one based on what type of maps are played most often being bigger or smaller. I think the answer is usually 4 - 5. I like the training grouns premis but I know I don't have time to school players, graduate players, ban players and all of that. I have a kid now and Ihave no time. The concept is great though. If it is pursued, please take that up with Kid and see what he can do. Maybe he can run a training ground for his own server. The taste of blood will determine which servers players will go to. I tend to go to the weaker player server since I seem more Godlike there. I love stepping in on a all noob deemer server and giving them hell. You know your good when they call you a cheater! What I'm saying is I'd like to leave CG out of the running as far as being a stepping stone whether it is the first or middle or last stone. Kid has been back up a week or two only. I have a feeling he will quickly get his following back in order but give it time. It takes lots of time before the people find a server they like and return to it regularly. |

LOL Mah. Not an option. MHM was hard to build. CG was easy compared to MHM. Way too much effort into MHM to let go now. Same with CG. Thanks for the suggestion... |
