Post subject:  Funny numbers

Over at another forum MEAT had been asking me to raise the MapVote replay limit from 10 to a higher number since he was sick of playing the same 10 most popular maps. The default setting in MapVote is 2 or 4 I think. Anyway, there were others that wanted that number increased too so I jacked it up to like 60 or about 1/2 of the total number of maps in order to force people to have to select other maps than the top 10 favorites.

Tonight, MEAT mentioned that the new map replay cycle number was too high and he wanted me to reduce that number so that he would be able to play the maps he likes more often. Here is his quote:

Meat said:

hehe....excuse me. 60+ means we never get to play any of the good maps but once....that is what I meant by bring the count down so we can play the old maps we like more then once.

Here was my reply which cracked me up:

So, you want me increase the replay limit from what it was when it was too small but you want me to reduce it from what it is now so you can have a chance to play the maps again sooner that you were sick of before as well as the maps you prefer. Actually, mathmatically, out of 60 you don't like the 1st 10 as they are played too much. You said you like about 10 maps so I'll assume they are the next 10 after the 1st 10 or we'll just say every other one of the next 20. So with 60 - the first 10 + 20 of which you may like about half of them that makes about 30 maps to cycle which means that if I set it to that, you'd get to play 1 map you like out of every 3. Right? If I reduce that down to we'll say a total of 20 maps then you would only like a possible 1/2 of those maps being you know you don't like the same ol original 10 that always get picked in MapVote 1st and would only get to play the maps you like on average every other map or we'll just say you'll get to play a map you like half of the time BUT we know that the 1st 10 will be played first as they always have been by using the vote so you would then get to play your favorite 10 maps after the other 10 you don't like. I can't tell which 10 you like so chances are that using the other formula from above when we were running thiry maps and you only liked 1/2 of the last twenty when we apply that same concept, you may only like 1/2 of the last ten maps in the 20 map rotation meaning you may only enjoy 5 maps out of 20 which puts the odds at a worse count in that then you would on average only like 1 in 4 maps. It's so clear except the part about how many maps you think I should set in the map replay limit in MapVote. What is that number again my master?

OK. That all said and not taking anything away from MEAT who has a perfectly valid point, what should the Map Repeat limit be set at on CG? Thanks!

You know, when Meat doesn't like a map, he leaves, just like any other player... When I play twice a map in less of 15 or 20 minutes I think it's very close to re-do the same as I love to play maps in which there is a big challenge (those I know less).
10 doesn't please many players, 60 doesn't please Meat (and may be other players ?) the only thing that perhaps is a solution could be a random selection ?...

I don't think I'm capricious...

That said, I don't have the solution. Do whatever you think is good for you Herm !...

LOL that is a funny reply. How did he respond?

I don't want to lose MEAT as a player -- he's a pretty good guy, just coming to terms (slowly) with the nature of the game (everything/anything goes).

60 is a bit high-- it means we basically have to cycle through every single map before we can come back to, say, fractal... :)

How about just trying 20? That forces variety on the game. The problem with too high a number is that a player may choose a map and then leave, but then every player who logs on after the first player must live with the consequences of the first guy.

C'mon man. The server runs about 170 maps I think. 60 isn't even half of that so you wouldn't have to almost play every map. Hehe

MEAT did answer but not with a number. More discussion was all. I will change it to 20. How is that? Later!

I have to admit, I like the maps I like. Server settings do force you to play new maps. Try a higher number if you have a way to find maps that sit idle for a long time and remove them.

Hell Herm, your server you pick.
