Could be any number of things:

1. What 'region' are the DVDs suited for? Not all DVD players will cover discs from other countries.

2. Is it a DVD or VCD (video compact disc)? Some players will not work with these.

3. Do you have any problems with other discs? Could be as simple as cleaning the disc.

4. It's gremlins. Buy a gun.

Are the DVD's originals or copies? Some DVD players are very picky about the media the will run (brand, DVD-, DVD+, etc).

Are the new releases? There is now new DVD encrypting / protection on some late releases. Some of you may be old enough to remember the macrovision fiasco on VHS tapes where the protection was so heavy on some movies it rendered them un-playable on most VHS players. This could be a similar phenominom.

What are the movie titles?

O.K. sounds like its no a copy gaurd or media issue. Have you ever cleaned the laser lens on your DVD player? If not, four years of use would suggest it may be due. I've seen this on computers witrh an old CD player and/or burner before. They would play some discs but not others. After cleaning (sometimes it took more than one cleaning) all was well in the universe again. You can pick these up reasonably cheap. In short its a disc with a series of small brushes that sweep the lens as it searches the disc.
